Money Line Dogs are a must play

    Jan 25, 2012

The old adage that you must hit 57% winners to show a profit in sports betting is a myth and a thing of the past. It used to be that way before the onset of online wagering and money lines in all sports but that is no longer the case. In fact, when wagering on sports, laying juice will be a detriment to your bankroll and sooner rather than later, you’ll go broke. It’s simply impossible to overcome the vig over an extended period of time and anyone that tells you anything different is misinformed. So let’s have a look at betting on money-line dogs as opposed to laying a juice.

We’ll use a money line favorite of –140 as an example with a take-back of +130.

Let’s assume you’re wagering on three baseball games a day at an average of -140 per game for $100 each game and let’s assume you do that for an entire season. For six months or 180 days that would be 540 bets per season at an average of –140 per game. Of course, that’s a generalization but most bettors agree that laying –140 isn’t so bad when they believe they have a great chance of winning the bet. Ok, now let’s assume that you hit 60% of those, an unlikely scenario when you consider that the best teams in baseball play about .600 ball. But let’s assume that you have a great year and hit 60% winners.

Therefore we have 540 ball games with 60% winners would see you go 324-216.

    Now we’ll multiply 324 x $100.00 = $32,400.00 worth of winners.

    Then we’ll multiply 216 x –$140.00 = $30,240.00 worth of losers.

$32,400 (winners) less $30,240 (losers) = a relatively small profit of $2,160, spanning 540 bets. That’s based on a very solid year, hitting 60% winners. A more likely scenario is you go somewhere between 45%-55% and when you add those numbers up when laying juice the results are staggering and they’re not in your favor.

Let’s assume now you have a decent year and hit 52% winners with the exact same wagers.

    560 games x 52 % winners = 288 winners and 272 losers.

    288 x 100 = $28,800 in wins

272 x –140 = $38,080 in losses, which is an eye opening $10,080 loss for the season.

In other words, if you’re a hundred dollar unit player, laying an average of  -140 per game and hit 52% winners, you’ll lose more than $10,000 for the season.

Now, let’s say you wager strictly on dogs at an average of +130 and you hit that same 52%.

    288 losses at –$1.00 = $28,800 in losses

272 wins @ +130 = $35,360 in wins for a total profit of $6,560.00 (or plus 65.6 units) for the season, which is a staggering difference of close to $17,000 for the year.

The more juice you lay, the more difficult this equation becomes to show a profit. Moneyline underdogs win every day, especially in baseball and hockey and it’s for the above shown examples that you should never lay juice consistently or you’re guaranteed to lose.

Consider that every team in baseball will win at least 60 games and lose at least 60 games with rarely an exception to that. What they do in the other games will ultimately decide whether they have a good or bad record at the end of the year but the point is that it’s more proof that dogs win daily.

So, if you’ve been laying juice it’s time to break that habit. When you play underdogs, you don’t need to hit a high percentage to show a profit and even if you have a bad year, the losses will be limited. A bad year laying juice will destroy your bankroll and until you change your habit, the same results will emerge. Freud defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results". If you're a chalk player, we can guarantee you that you have been losing forever. You don't want to be considered insane, do you?

This is discussion worth having.  Related to basketball, I've been continually taking the +100, or even the +110 lines on games, even if it means losing what are considered to be the best lines.  Ex. Indiana +6 tonight is the -110 line, whereas i took them at +5 at +107.  Taking into ccount critical numbers and whatnot, and usually "sell" myself onto a whole number to avoid getting hooked.  I have found that this is  great way to generate a bit of premium on each play.  Admittedly there are the occaisional push when it could have been a win, but as long as i keep that ratio under 7:1 or so, I have found it to be profitable.

I could not disagree with you more Sir.  You don't know me, I don't know you, but I am a living breathing testament over the long, long term that the information you are providing here is not only incorrect, it can potentially cost some unsuspecting 'players' money fairly quickly.  Though few on here truly know me, and my story, I ABSOLUTELY KNOW, as surely as I know I am typing this reply, you are completely wrong to your core.  I am non-confrontational in this Forum, BUT I have gotten to know a few people on here recently, and am concerned that your, seemingly, well laid-out theory will actually convince even one person on here to bet straight dogs--a mistake.

I personally play short dogs, and some heavy Favs, but rarely--though I do at times--play long dogs.  I cap on a season (NHL) basis of 58-63%, the last time I finished outside that realm was well beyond 15 seasons ago, when I began recording and keeping record of my plays/stats.

The truth to the matter is that this 'system' of thought you are laying out here is a 'Lazy man's ideology', pure and simple--effectively cutting out 50% of the potential plays that are, more often than not, winners.  This is no more correct, nor accurate in saying you should ONLY play favorites, you should ONLY play Under on all 6 goal O/Us, Over all 5 goal O/Us, ONLY play a fade when a team lost 4 straight, jump on last years playoff teams each time they win 2 straight.  Sir, I have heard, and seen, them all.  The ONLY correlating similarities in every single one of them is that are present is that it derives from a man's mind that is either too confused to contemplate ALL aspects of the available games and needs to shorten his 'scope', or just too lazy to put real work in to beat the book.

Take the potential world's greatest pitcher that is told early on that high velocity fast balls are not worth throwing b/c many of them are hit for HR's and lose games--you are automatically eliminating everything over 85 mph, as you are doing in this frail argument.

I thank God that I was taught the ropes correctly early on, and had not been infected by this type of limited thought process, but surely hope that I was ALWAYS smart enough to not of fallen victim to it.

FACT: There are values at any level of line.  Using an actual game I capped, and won recently... I ran the analytics, simulations, research, and I concluded that I had a 74% chance of getting a return on my investment (wining my ticket).  The line was -130.  Given those numbers.  Now the only question is whether or not my calculations are correct.  Given 15 years of statistical data, I know I have up to a 3% statistical variance.  So let’s go with 3% negative sway to my figures, that means I would lose this play (the sport no longer matters, it is now simply a statistical proposition) 29%, and win 71% of the time.  Now, all I care about is that my figures are correct, and no longer concerned if I win, or lose, this particular play.  As long as my figures are correct, there will be swings both ways in my route to say…1,000 plays that fall into this percentile.  So, I play 1,000 (@$130 per for instructional purposes) of these tickets (in a variety of sports) and win 710, and lose 290 of them.  NOTE: I am not concerned about the 10 straight I win in this bracket, nor of the 10 straight I lose.  It will all even out to winning between 710 and 770 of these plays, but we are using the bottom end for instructional purposes (710).  So, I win $100 X 710 (= $71,000), and lose $130 X 290 (=$37,700).  And you are telling me that I should just write these (favorites) off?  Good thing I did not run into you, nor the “Guru” who “knows his stuff” long ago, I surely would have had to of worked a “Real job” throughout my life, lol.

In short, and once more, I am non-confrontational here, and in my life, but you are sprewing untruths that have been spawned, clearly, by someone who knows not what the hell he is talking about, and obviously has you bamboozled into thinking he is a Sharp.  I can only hope you believe me, for your sake, that he is definitely NOT a sharp.  I personally know some of the top handicappers on planet earth, and NOT ONE of them would agree with word one of your post.  It simply makes no sense, but unfortunately, someone is probably going to read it and follow it, to their own peril.  I give people the benefit of the doubt, and will just chalk this up to you being someone who has been shammed, and you mean only to help, but you are not helping Sir.  Most of the people on here, if they are honest about it, they lose more than they win, and bad information will only perpetuate those losses, so I could not sit back idly by and not sound off in hopes that someone who might of bought into this crock will think again.

No matter what, I wish you luck, and all the best going forward.  Note I will not be back to counter any replies, I spent more time than I have on this reply.  Good day Sir.

    7NLN7,

I agree with your philosophy for sure but how do I get the analytics, simulations and research without waiting the next 15 years to obtain data.  Is there a formula or a stat program you came up with?  I want to be in on those plays with a 70 to 79% chance of winning.

I appreciate your question, and if the tables were turned, it is the exact question I would be asking if I were you, but the 15 years is only the time that I began 'keeping' records, my career goes back 30.  In those 30 years I, litterally was (am, and probably always will be) a workaholic So, imagine trying to explain to someone how you excelled in your career over 30 years on a forum post--literally impossible.  I'd recommend right off that you started a journal and kept record of all your thoughts on any game you play, the results, and if lost, your thoughts on what you feel you should have done differently.  Though this is not a major detailed 'technique' I assure you it will either increase your winning plays, or decrease your losing plays.... Excellent post OP. Really makes you think about the value you receive when you bet a dog for sure. A few nights ago, the Canucks were huge dogs against the Hawks and provided some nice payback and x2 my original money instead of 1x (roughly speaking). This made me think that it might be a good idea to just bet dogs because sooner or later, even if you hit 50-50 for the entire year, your still making some solid profit. In my case, since I'm going $50 bucks a game, i can rack up a couple of G's this way.

It's as true today as back then.

    Thanks for reposting it.

    One info!

This NHL season, closing line Pinnacle

Dog on rod only line from +100 to +110 gives you profit to 1086$ on 100$ bet, rest of games are burn.
Favorit on rod -110 to -130, profit 3538$, rest of games are burn.
Favorit at home from -120 to -350 gives you profit of 4669$.

2013-14 NHL season was totally different. Ther is no magic, all you have to do is to finde real value on every game and play those with big different then line. In all sports
