I think that Rome saw Horton with his head down and went to lay him out. I do not think it was a deliberate intent to injure but it was dirty in the fact that it was quite late. Taking the following into account:
1. Purposeful late hit that ended up to the head.
2. No intent to injure. Rome kept his shoulder in tight and the elbow did not fly.
3. Rome's status as a non-elite player.
I think he gets 1-2 games. But...I have been way off on some of these disciplinary hearings. It seems that the letter of the law still varies by player.
Most importantly of course...is that Horton makes a full recovery. I hope we are not looking at a Marc Savard / Patrice Bergeron / Sidney Crosby type of event.

I think the Bruins will indeed play with an edge. It has been very effective against the Sedin twins who have all but disappeared. And...until the Nucks prove they can crack the Bruins PK...the Bruins will likely take the chance to complete there checks to the fullest extent.
The Nucks looked very drained in Game 3. I expect them to be way more focused in Game 4. I now have my doubts about Bobby Lou a little bit and I wonder if the Nucks do too.

This is why I have so much respect for you Boo.
You're a BOS fan and so am I, but you tell it like it is with an honest (not a homer) opinion.
It truly sucks that Horton is out the way he's played in these playoffs. "It is what it is" and now somebody has to really step up.
Just hope he's going to be OK.

With all that said when will they stop using this gladiator hockey equipment. The shoulder pads these days are honestly not far off from a lighter form of concrete. The stuff we played with 20-25 years ago was cardboard compared to this crap.
What is better a guy with a separated shoulder or a guy that can no longer remember his way home because of a hockey hit?
Agree 100% PB
I hate to say it but somebody is gonna get killed one of these days. They can NEVER take hitting out of the game, but maybe with some equipment changes guys won't be getting hurt as bad.

1. Horton was in a vulnerable position. Same applies here as when a player is facing the boards and gets hit from behind. Wether on the boards or at centre ice, a vulnerable position is a vulnerable position. He could still have crushed him from the chest down without leaning and throwing his momentum upwards into his face/head area as he clearly did.
2. He targeted his head with his shoulder. Rome made a mini circle back to take him out which shows he premeditated the hit (thought about it and knew what he was doing). He leaned and upwardly drove all his momentum into Hortons unsuspecting face/head.
3. It was a late hit. People can say keep your head up all they want but at the end of the day Horton was no longer the puck carrier and he should not be expecting to be hit nevermind to be targeted to the face/head with a concrete shoulder pad from an opposing player as he rushes up the ice without the puck.
As fans we just lost an explosive, exciting and gifted hockey player to an illegal hit from a part time 3rd tier hockey player
Polar...I agree totally with 1 and 3 but I am not all the way there on 2 thats why I think its just a couple games. If that elbow went flying a la Matt Cooke on Savard...I would be in favor of a much more severe suspension.
I think we all agree that this is a hit that has to go. Your point about the shoulder pads are spot on. Like being hit with a sledgehammer. And...I have no doubt he meant to lay him out just still have questions on the intent to injure which is a lot for me.
By the way...nice cash last night .
I am off to work soon boys. Cannot wait til tomorrow night.

Is there anyone who lives outside of Vancouver or maybe Montreal who is rooting for the Canucks? Everyone is talking about how dirty a team they are. They are making a mockery of the NHL punishment committee by flaunting their gloves near the mouths of Bruins players and laughing while they do it. Everyone that I talk to is now pulling for the Bruins It has the purist as well as the casual fan just disgusted.
I agree that the hit last night wasn't as bad as everyone thinks. Horton did get caught admiring a pass. The hit was definitely late and that was worthy of a penalty. It was a cheap shot. Not worthy of a big suspension though. The only reason he will be suspended is because Horton is out for the series and they didn't punish Burrows.

tought break for horton, hope he is ok, but outside of the hit being late, i really didn't see anything wrong with it, Rome elbow appears to be right in the "B" on Horton's jersey, Horton got caught admiring his pass.
hey everyone i know ive been gone a while but ive still watched every game (just had to lay off the gambling it was over taking my school work) but i have to agree with sean here. i saw nothing dirty about the hit. and i didnt think it was so late that rome was intentionally trying to hurt horton. hockey is a fast paced game and if your not alert your going to get yourself hurt. just my opinion here guys. i hope horton has a speedy full recovery and the NHL realizes this suspension is a mistake.

In the old days they don't even call that a penalty let alone a dirty hit.
Keep your head up and keep playing.
In the old days they had enforcers to patrol the game. SO if you going to take a players head off. Look out your catching a beaten and the Word RESPECT is lost in the NHL. They have no regard for each others health at all.
Remember when McSorley hit Gilmore. Who came in and would fight him Wendal. You can't do it no more. Take the instigator rule out. Bring back the Inforcer and your star players won't be sitting out half the season with concussions. This is a big problem.
Or the days when Clarke would hit a guy and hide behind his team. Piece of fucking shit he is. Fuck I hate Clarke. Fuking hate him.

Pause it when he lets the puck go and then when he's hit.
You want to get technical, okay let's.
From the Letter B on the ice to the blueline. Horton passes the puck to Lucic. Lucic has the puck in the Nucks zone. and Horton not even at the blue yet WITHOUT THE PUCK. Horton had 2 strides going on his 3rd stride without the puck. He gets to the blue and gets hammered without the puck.
SO IS THAT A LATE FUCKING HIT.
IS THAT BETTER.
