I read that the 49ers had the 30th easiest schedule in the NFL this season while the Saints were tied for the 13th toughest schedule this season.

The 49er D is good (not great), but their best chance to win is to "win ugly" - lot's of Turnovers, Gore chewing up the clock, a ST and/or Defensive TD, etc...

In other words, a "perfect storm" of several things going their way for them to win.

NOLA stacks the box, stops Gore and makes Alex Smith beat you.
Other than Vernon Davis, there aren't isn't anyone else that scares Defenses catching the ball on the 49ers.
They don't have a 1,000 yard per season receiver on their roster, and Alex Smith becomes very inaccurate under modest pressure.

And let's not forget, the Saints have 3 Pro Bowlers on their OL
4 if you count their TE

Brees gets sacked about once every 27 pass attempts.
Smith gets sacked about once every 10 pass attempts.

Saints score 24-27 pts. while SF scores 17-20 as they have their usual difficult time putting the ball in the End Zone, as evidenced by the 33 or so TD's they've scored on Offense all year and the 44 or so FG's (going by memory) they've had to settle for.

The Saints have scored something like 64 TD's and have done so in a much tougher division.

The 49ers won't be have the luxury of padding their Defensive stats against the likes of the Rams, Seahawks and Cards 6x per season.

BTW, the 49ers lost to AZ, squeaked by SEA, PHI and the Rams had them on the ropes with their 3rd string QB and might have taken the game to OT had he not been injured on the final drive in 49er territory late in the game and the Rams had to bring in their 4th string QB who has never thrown a pass in the NFL

It was the 49ers that played one of the softest schedules in the league, not the Saints.

The 49ers will keep it close for a half or so by grinding it out and keeping the Saints Offense on the sidelines and kicking a few FG's, but they will only be able to do that for only so long.

Unless they score a ST or Defensive TD, they don't have a chance.
Even if they do, they still won't be able to trade FG's for TD's and expect to win unless they get every break and get very lucky.

Brees "only" has a 100.7 QB rating on the road, so they won't put up their usual 34 ppg, but the score will be something like:

Saints 27
49ers 17

The Saints are peaking right now and are rolling.
I'm aware the 49ers haven't given up very many points in their last few home games, but they haven't really played anyone either during that stretch.

Even though it hasn't rained in weeks and won't between now and gametime, expect the usual shenanigans and for the 49ers to water down the field in an attempt to slow down the speedy, superior Saints Offense.

Bring your long cleats. You'll probably need them as that field will be slick as snot.

I don't think this game will be a blowout but im just not sure that the niners have the offense to keep up in scoring. I know their defense is good but is it good enough to keep this saints team from scoring 4 td's? Because i can't trust alex smith to ever give me more than 20 points, ever....

If the Lions did this and the Lions did that. The Lions DID NOT DO IT. If my Aunt had balls, she would be my Uncle. The Lions D sucks and the 49ers D will be a challenge for Brees, but mark my words, the Saints win by at least 10. GL to whom you choose.

I'll take defense all day long in this one. New Orleans is going to get a dog fight in this one. last year on Monday night football the saints were barely able to squeak by the 9ers with a Singletary led squad 25-22. candlestick is a slow track and NO on grass is just not the same team. Add grass, being on the road, and playing the best defense in the nfc I'll take the other side of NO all day long. Not to mention, everyone is talking about how bad the 9ers offense is, well NO def is not exactly the 85' bears. NO has to blitz because they cannot stop offenses straight up. well alex Smith was the second best QB vs the Blitz in the nfl, next to Tom Brady.

Personally i think the 9ers will pound the football and keep the ball out of Brees' hands. Lack of possessions will get Brees antsy and he'll throw at least 1 pick.

I'll take the best def on any surface vs a great offense in domes every time...

The defensive stats are also skewed.  If the saints played in the NFC West, I'm sure the defense would be top rated also.  Try playing teams with a big lead and them playing catch up all game long.  Do you not think that they will be giving up garbage time stats in all of those games?

9ers didn't give up a rushing TD until week 14 and have the best run def in the NFL, allowing 72yds/gm. The saints will not be able to run the football...

I am loving all the love for the Saints this week!!  Reminds me of last year, when the Saints (who weren't as good last year - but were still decent) went on the road in the playoffs against a team that was inferior in pretty much every area.  Anyone remember how THAT game turned out?  I didn't think so...

They have 3 capable RBs in sproles, thomas and ivory.  The difference between the saints this year and the saints last year is the run game they do have.

9ers only played 2 nfc west opponents thru the first 12 wks of the season... 9ers had the best def during that time w/o the benefit of the "NFC West" patsies... on a side note, the NFC south wasn't exactly murders row... not to mention the saints lost to the Rams so they're 0-1 vs the NFC West this past yr...

haha yea you talk about the 49ers play in a easy conference, when the saints LOST to the rams in there conference, getting back willis will be huge for the 49ers

49ers def have a shot here and this is the best defense the Saints have played.
