I live here and can assure you we are treating each other just fine. I live in Toronto and go to Montreal often and have a great time and get treated very well without knowing a word of French so there is that answer. Vancouver is a beautiful place as well, a bit of money attitude but that comes with the wealthy, very nice all the same though.
I drove by many shopping malls and elementary schools and just saw people Christmas shopping and children laughing and playing. There were no gunmen to be found anywhere so that is a plus.

When Americans go backpacking in Europe they generally wear Canadian flag patches on their nap sacks because everyone hates you. I don't, I have lived in three American cities in my life for short periods, New York, Boston and San Diego which was my longest stay and I absolutely loved it and have many good American friends!
