My travels lead me to believe there is a broad spectrum. I never was into the drugs, but I grew up and hung around enough to appreciate the music and the culture. You either like it, or ya don't. Europe in 72 for me. Love me some Scarlet/Fire though, too.

Any one that thinks kiss was a better band than the Dead, other than theatrics, really shows a lack of any sense of musical knowledge.Of course it all comes down to ears, brains and feel.

All that has as much to do about music as a bunch of grown men dressing up like children for halloween.Perhaps that was their target audience.

I'm the kind of fan that in the 80's when the yuppies discovered the Dead, I use to scalp tickets and make more then all the incense/tye-die camp followers combined.I read on the Dead message boards that they weren't coming back to some sites in the Northeast because of this activity. My favorites were Spanish Jam/The Other/TerripenStation. Dead in the late 70's were the best and Junkie Jerry in the 90's were the worse/sad. If the band could get jamming when PigPen got into a monotnous rap/song they could get going and that was before Jerry rehearsed his jams.

Seriously... I don't care for either group from a musical standpoint. Their fans are huge and very loyal on both sides. I really did like "In the Dark" back in the 80's from the dead... it was a very good studio album. Kiss Live is pretty damn good too. Beyond that I'm not a fan of either.
I have been to several Dead shows back in the 80's... mostly to just party with my friends and bang hippie chicks. Never have been to a Kiss concert, but always wanted to. I do have a recent show on my DVR... looks good.
I want to see about 100 dead heads have a battle royale with the Kiss Army. I think Kiss Army would kick their behind... but more importantly I would laugh my behind off.

Dead are boring as hell in a live performance. No energy at all. I never liked it... I know some think I'm crazy and think their liveshows are awesome.
Kiss is all about energy, but spectacular shows... leaning on the shock value. Not really my thing though... the blood sport crap from Gene, and other over the top antics... really?? Not my thing.
Two very contrasting styles...

I like the Dead a lot ,and I saw them 17 times between 1984 & 1994. But I would not even put them in my top 5 for fave bands .I saw some good shows ,and some bad Jerry - Smacked Out ones too. Not really into all of their fan base . Most are smug and very limited in their musical tastes.( I don't like Phish either !! ) When I was in college a lot of Deadheads at my school were horrified that My roomate and I listened to a ton of Iron Maiden , Sabbath, Deep Purple, Motorhead, Hawkwind & Judas Priest. They just could not fathom it. I think The Dead's their best period is between 1969 to 74 where they were a tight unit. The Europe 1972 Tour is their best and pigpen's last blast. plus the shows were some of their longest Any show from this tour is worth checking out. And as Buscuit has said before ,You would be hard -pressed to find a bad 1977 show either.

Hey Wreckedem , I have one for you .It turns out a good friend of mine for the last 20 years or so, is playing drums in Ace Freeley's band. His name is Matt Franklin. But I think he goes by the Stage name Matt Starr. He is out in L.A. now having the time of his life. I think he is now in the studio making a 2nd LP with Ace. I was never a big Kiss fan ,but I respect them . Did you read that article about them in Rolling Stone last month? It was pretty good.

hey man, cool avatar of THE GREATEST.... yea, Ace has a new album (Space Invader) releasing this summer.
I read the RS article. It wasn't very flattering. They came across as bitter, insecure old men now. That being said, they all were 4 very different people.
btw, LOVE all those bands you listed above.

no, I'm not asking your preference between the two...just who YOUR band is?
I saw the dead once.....once.
I'm a big fan of the of the most loved rock bands of all time... Stones (3 shows), Aerosmith (7shows), Metallica (one show), Eagles, REO, Sammy Hagar, Most of the 90's grunge scene, many of the 80's hair bands (def leppard and tesla a couple of my favorites).
I mostly nowadays try to explore and try to find great rock of today. It is out there, but you have to look for it more because it does not dominate pop radio. My favorite current rock band is Foo fighters. If you have not listened to their latest CD "Wasted Light" you are missing out. They release a new CD later this year. I have yet to see them live, but look forward to it.

89-90, when brent mydland was all jacked upon speedballs, the tempo was a lot faster. After he died the beat slowed down. I think Phil was into speedballs too. Not sure. Anyway Brent's last lines he sang before he died,"walking with the devil side by side...he said I got to go but my friends can stick around" heroin is the devil and has been the end of many amazing musicians
