Red Hot Chilli Peppers.  There were a lot of great ones, but no one can beat RHCP for me.

Yes and everything after badmotorfinger sucked in comparison

I know you said to only choose one, and I went with Alice in Chains, but these are also high on my list of bands that rocked in the 90s:

Blink-182 (they get flack for having a lot of childish lyrics, but they also put out several good serious songs)
Guns N Roses
Nirvana
Tool
Soundgarden
Filter (Title of Record is excellent, yet the radio only played "Take a Picture" from this CD)
Pearl Jam
Primus
Stone Temple Pilots
311
Sublime
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Offspring
Green Day
The Smashing Pumpkins

Honorable mention, but not the top:
No Doubt
Jane's Addiction
Bush
Creed (they get bashed a lot, and even though their lead singer is a douche, they have several decent songs)
Weezer
Nine Inch Nails (The original is good, but the "Hurt" video and song by Johnny Cash is a depressing masterpiece).

Yes.  U2 was a great band in the 80s, but went pop in the 90s and have been sh it ever since.
