DEPECHE MODE ANNOUNCE 2009 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES

SPECIAL DELUXE EDITION BOX SET SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE ON APRIL 20TH (Europe) IN CONJUNCTION WITH 12th STUDIO ALBUM 'SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE'

NEW YORK, NY - February 20, 2009 — Groundbreaking electro legends Depeche Mode have announced North American cities and dates for their upcoming "Tour Of The Universe," which will mark the group's most extensive outing in the region in several years. Kicking off in Toronto on July 24th, the band's 22-city North American tour will cover both the US and Canada and hit most major markets across the continent (see dates below). Tickets for select markets are set to go on sale on March 13th.

Depeche Mode's "Tour of the Universe" is happening in conjunction with the release of the group's twelfth studio album, Sounds Of the Universe (Mute/Capitol/Virgin), which will be released on April 20th in Europe, and April 21st in North America. Alongside a standard CD format, Depeche Mode has announced that Sounds Of The Universe will also be released as a Special Edition CD+DVD and a Deluxe Box Set that will include a host of exclusive material:

•  Three CDs containing the album, bonus songs and remixes, as well as 14 demos available exclusively-- a career first for Depeche Mode.
•  A DVD that will feature three films: Making The Universe, a behind-the scenes documentary about the recording of the album, Usual Thing, Try And Get The Question In The Answer (a conversation with the band discussing recording techniques, intercut with personal archive footage from previous album sessions) and Sounds Of The Universe (a short film featuring track by track with the band). The DVD will also include the promo video for the album's first single "Wrong" (directed by Patrick Daughters), plus four songs filmed live in the studio in December 2008 and a version of the album the album mixed in DTS 5.1 surround sound
•  Two 84-page hardback books, one featuring the lyrics to all the songs from the Sounds Of The Universe sessions, accompanied by exclusive photography by Anton Corbijn. The second book will contain exclusive and candid studio photography by Daniel Miller, Ben Hillier, Luke Smith and Ferg Peterkin.

In addition, the album will also be released as a double vinyl LP (including a Sounds Of The Universe CD) and as a download.

I couldn't disagree more.  The more I listen to Wrong, the more I like it.  It's definitely a little "different", but classic nonetheless.  Can't wait to hear the rest of the disc.

Let me know how you like the rest of the album.

I had the youtube clip running and my wife heard it the same (she also went to the same tour I did, their best with Violator) and she said the same thing..its monotonous, unoriginal and boring.

This isnt some garage band here, depeche has a high standard to keep and sorry but I wanted to turn it off about two minutes in, but I gave it a chance..its the same thing about 5 times, its a total snoozer.

Everytime I listen to it , it gets better .
 
A lot of what made Mode " Mode " was Alan Wilder . We all know that . But , I do think that the band is doing a nice job in recapturing the old synth sound that made them so magical back in the day . The last album was awsome as well , IMO . Alan did things with the songs that only a true musical genius could do . He was the perfect person to take Martin's songs to that level that was purely epic .
 
I have heard a few snippets from this new album and I like what I hear . But I'm biased . I don't think Depeche Mode can write a "bad" song . ( Well , except for Condemnation .....  )
 
Anyway , I'll see them at least three times . They put on the best shows , period .

It's not the same thing 5 times.  Listen to the lyrics.  I love the friggin lyrics, which isn't usually DM's strong suit IMO, even if the word wrong is used 68 times.  It's definitely not unoriginal.  I have never heard anything like it.  It is definitely different, sort DM's take on rap/r&b.  If repetitive is a problem then you can't like Personal Jesus from Violator either.

Give the song a few more tries and read the lyrics too.  You might come around.  On first listen it didn't hit me either.

Wall, have you come around on "Wrong" yet?  I'm a little worried about the rest of the album.  I've heard some of a couple other sounds that were less than inspiring.  We'll see.  But I think Wrong is brilliant and unique.  My 6y/o daughter loves it too, but she is a huge DM fan.

Not at all..worse in fact. I expect more from them and this is a fizzle to me. The synth is just unoriginal too, I think this is a very unmemorable song.

Good example on the Personal Jesus song, one of the most redundant on that album and very forgettable.

Very disappointed with this album.  Forgettable.  Other than WRONG, which is an instant classic.  A few notable songs.  "Peace" will be controversial.  Sounds like Erasure doing the Beatles.  Come Back is strong.  Hold to Feed is danceable.

But the album is really missing the bombastic, melodic, tracks that would rock live, other than Wrong.

Sad to say, a step back from Playing The Angel.

In that order.  And if they want to stick with those four for the Dallas concert this Summer, I'll be happy.

Thats my Top Ten Mode Album order . I hav'nt heard the new album in it's entirety , so I can't rank it yet . I hope it's not as bad as Depeche2 says above . The couple of songs I've heard I've liked .
 
I throw a curve to the Albums after Alan left . All of the albums after Songs of Faith & Devotion . That was Alan's final album   . After he left , so did that magic that the songs had . They still do great work , but what Alan did with Martin's songs was a thing of beauty . It can't be replaced .

No, I haven't listened to Recoil.  I should.  I really like Ultra and Playing The Angel too.  Not so much Exciter, and sadly not this one either, although there are a few interesting songs, and WRONG is now in my top 5 DM songs ever.

Your top 10 list is very solid.

Kinda sucks that DM is skipping the midwest to play Lollapalooza.  I'll go though of course, but would prefer a regular show.  Got tix for Vegas though and am hoping I'll be able to go.

I like Come Back on this album a lot, although I think they could have done more with the song, assuming what I've heard is the final album cut.

I have the exact same feeling as the ending of a review i read

All in, a solid album, though, with fewer songs you, a mere human, can sing along to. Like seeing that girl from high school at a 20 year reunion, you still feel the love, but you have to work harder now for the lust.
