Can anyone link a good hip hop song

I'm sure there has to be a few, and according to the commercial that's been running and touting the importance of said genre(sp) and before anyone gets the wrong idea i'm a firm believer in the adage "each to their own" I'm just trying to discern if the continued hype of the music is equal to it's true value.Well actually i know the answer to that question but if there is some good music that i have missed i'm eager to hear it.One thing though, it has to be human beings playing instruments and singing.

My favorite "rap" song of all time. Albeit it's a cover/sample of the Isley Brothers. But what rap song isn't a cover or sample?

The lyrics are clean and sharp. No killing, stealing, or stupid shit.

The roots are the best and most noteworthy example of a hip hop group that actually plays instruments. In this video they parody the rap videos that were popular at the time, with the champagne bottles and scantily clad women, which is not their shtick at all. Many hip hop producers are actual real musicians and multi-instrumentalists. Sampling and drum machines were the beginnings of the genre but it has since evolved in many respects. Many of the bigger hip hop acts, even those with sample based beats, actually travel with full bands, when they can afford to do so.

This is Anderson Paak, who aside from being a vocalist, is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist. Hip hop is many things. It's not simply a cookie cutter genre. No genre of music is.

You know, it's funny, punk rock musicians, most of them historically, can barely play their instruments. This is a well documented fact. I love punk rock but musically, it's often nothing more than chaos with some semblance of a best. EDM/House music has spawned multiple subgenres, all of which are based on sampling, drum machines, and computers. Heck, some of the more popular current pop artists responsible for the Top 40 stuff you hear on the radio, produced many of their most noteworthy tracks using programs like Fruity Loops. Yet you never see these threads about how some old timer hates punk rock, or hates EDM/house music. Or how some old timer hates Top 40 pop music but you always hear about how somebody hates rap/hip-hop. You always hear about how it's not real music but you don't hear about how Billie Eilish isn't real music. Isn't that interesting? I find it interesting.

Seen the roots live about 7 or 8 times.

Each set was like no other set.

In Milwaukee at Summerfest years ago, they put on a set of straight rock n roll. Jimmi Hendrix style soloing it was amazing. 

A couple years later I stumbled into Tao night club in Vegas. I was in the chill room, felt like staying out of the main club dance mayhem. The music was relaxed, soul mixed in trip hop and regae type vibe. Eventually noticed that Quest Love was DJ'ing. Got to talk to him a little on top of it.

Some folks are just talented on multiple levels, musically. And seeing them live doing it in different ways is the only way to know.

Okay i cant play music but i have 2 good ears and have seen the Byrds - Muddy Waters ( 4 times ) alot of good funk bands in my area and a whole lot in between down thru the years. I started this thread because i do not and and still don't know what hip hop is.I see commercials on A&E tv for a show advocating the importance of hip hop music, when in reality it's all hype, the show and the so called music.I feel the EXACT same about punk.Nirvana gmab, i have friends who played and sounded better than they ever did, by miles...Davis. So you have this dude who wore a big clock necklace was on tv regarding the importance of hip hop.IMO there has not one hip hop song that could touch anything that encompasses the great songs of rhythm & blues, soul, etc. The Roots are without a doubt musically inclined and good.Many things i dislike in life but hate is not in my vocabulary and i have been preaching against that for many a year.Hip Hop Rap Punk is just about all the same.. A&E television shows not withstanding.When you have seen some of the greatest musicians of their time perfecting their craft there is no comparison to cats stealing a beat or two and the most important thing by far..rhyming, and kind of funny how that is also the easiest part of this hip hop rap music.

In fact in many of these songs it seems that rhyming is the only thing that matters...for i knew i had to rise above it all......

Sometimes the best part of hip hop is the rapping skills, sometimes it’s the bass and the beat, and sometimes it’s about the lyrics. The best is about all three.

The backstory of this song is crazy. 50 Cent recorded this one for his first album, and as he was waiting for it to be released he was shot nine times (probably because of this song) and subsequently dropped by his label. He came back 2-3 years later and made millions.

The song also has samples, beats, and references to many prior famous songs as a hat tip to stuff by Biggie Smalls and Keith Murray.
