Like many of you I am anxiously awaiting the start of Spring Training
and the Regular season. For a long time I never knew why I found
betting baseball so much more enjoyable than any other sport. As I read
through many threads in the other sports forums I am beginning to see
why baseball is my favorite.
First off... If you think about it, there really aren't any "MOOSE"
sightings when betting baseball either you won or you lost. If you won
you made the right play, if you lost you didn't. Watching these College
Basketball games I see so many good UNDER bets get screwed because a
team sends it's garbage time players in and they start draining
meaningless 3's. In football I have seen great OVER bets get screwed
because a team just sits on the ball running clock. In baseball there
aren't many of those factors when betting totals. The object of the
game is for the batter to hit what the pitcher throws him. That stays
the same the entire game, never will the batter intentionally take a
88mph fastball down the middle of the plate. Granted there are so
called meaningless runs i.e. total set at 10.5 a team is losing 8-2 in
the bottom of the 9th and get a solo shot. But as I said the idea of
the game is for the batter to hit the ball. So in reality if you were
on the wrong side of that 8-3 final and lost your UNDER bet you weren't
really moosed. When capping baseball you look at the stats and averages.
The other great thing is we bet mostly sides on the ML... occasional
RL's but that is only when we are VERY confident in a play. Once again,
in football a 35-21 game with a 7.5pt spread gets killed on a
meaningless hail mary with 2 seconds left. Final 35-28. Same with
basketball... I've seen it many times and had it happen to
me. A spread get's killed when the scrubs from a team come in and jack
3's to cover. With baseball for the most part you pick if a team will
win or lose. Bottom of the 9th you have a team winning 4-3 and the
other team hits a walkoff 2 run homer. You lost the bet and not really
a moose. The other team was the better team that day. Finally, the
other great thing is there isn't ANY clock watching. No "only 2 minutes
left and I need 10 points for my over". I've seen baseball totals go
OVER in the first 2 inningts. When the game is over it is over. For the
most part the players are trying just as hard in the 5th inning as they
are in the 8th and 9th.
Now after reading this Loooong rambling you see how anxious I am for
the start of the season. I can't wait to start wagering, I have already
started ranking the teams and trying to get a good preview.
Anyone else have reasons they think make it so much more enjoyable to bet baseball than other sports?

apparently you've never bet on a game involving.......Armando Benitez
or: TurnBlOW
or: fill in the __________
yes baseball has especially the RL....fuck Mariano might do that better than anyone.....here's just a theory:...........while everyone has their favorite sports to wager one.......we all miss the other sports when they are no longer in session and things aren't going work so welll in the active ones

You're somewhat proving my point for me... You say moosed by someone like Turnbow. Well Turnbow was crap last year. He blew up a few times costing Brewers backers cash. But... when you were capping a Brewers game one of the BIG things you would see is how many times Turnbow has blown up. Once you see that maybe you stay away from the Brewers until he gets back on track. Mariano has blown some RL plays so when you are capping a yanks game you think that and only take Yanks RL if you think it will be a blowout or maybe you say I think it will be a close game and I know MO has a history of giving up a run or two with a lead so i'll go against the Yanks RL. Only in baseball is it like that...
While there are moose in every sport I suppose it's wrong to say there are NONE in baseball. I would say there are MUCH LESS in baseball than other sports.

I agree with you, baseball is probably my favorite sport to bet as well. I actually enjoy watching the games and making a little cash on the side makes it even more interesting. I truly enoy betting O/U's in baseball (especially Overs). It's fun to just sit and watch and hope for hits, hits, hits and runs, runs, RUNS! I'm tired of winter anyway (already!!....I live in Alaska!) and I'm ready to start talking baseball. Spring training is all a Pittsburgh fan has, as once the season starts, it's always apparent that the Bucs STILL have no shot at competing, regardless of the off-season moves the organization made.
.......... here's to .......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

theres alot less injury to key players during the games when my money is at risk,I like that. They do occur, yes, but i dont think it has the same impact as in football or hoops.
cant get here soon enough

i like the large sample from which we get to work. even though i primarily follow one team, i still get 150+ games with about 750 possible wager options (i very rarely play +1.5 RL's).

I love bases ..............But with work and family.......I usually burn out right about the All Star Break.................It is a serious grind. You can't afford any lapses. You have to be on it day in and day out. BUT if you have a nice bankroll AND ALOT of patience, baseball is a nice way to make some money. Good Luck to you all this season.

Any favorites to pick for the 2008 World Series Championship?
Boston Red Sox's are favored at +350
New York Yankees at +500
Detroit Tigers at +800
I choose LSU for the BCS National Championship game early on before the season started.
Wagered $100 to get $600. Was lucky during the middle of the season when they got knocked out of first place. But in the end, LSU was able to get back to first place again.

Love it like I love life. Not a better way to make money (in my opinion). 12 to 15 games per day for 6 straight months(except for All Star break)??? That's heaven sent right there. Constant grind, but well worth it...

pc, couldn't agree more!! in addition to your excellent points, you rarley see players "take the day off" as you do ALL THE TIME IN THE DOG DAYS OF THE NBA. starting pitchers entire livilehood depends on that start... they are always ready to go, sometimes the preformance doesn't match the preparation, but they come to work ready to go. also agree that it is way fun to have an over and watch it go over early....spend the rest of the day enjoying the game, drinkin beer, or mak anothr pick with the house$$$$!!

Baseball has got tobe quite a profit sport to bet on. Besides, American sports are bookmakers best friend because they know that they are designed to make you lose. Baseball has a little bit of a different ring to it in my book. I find it alot more profitable if you know what your doing/

I agree, after betting football for years, then baskets, and bases, I believe bases tends to be more accurate if you do your homework. What you expect to happen usually does in bases, while in football and basketball, a lot of time the opposite play hits!!!! All of the sports can be a grind, you are still better off to bet less games, March Madness is a good time to make some coin in baskets!!!

Awesome thread idea. It seems that in baseball, most of the time the teams goals are alligned with those of the better, except in some late inn. blowout situations where a poor pitching mop up man comes in toeat up innings. (This is the only exception to your idea-bet is under10.5-score is 8-1 going in bot 9 and the stud starter gives way). I also think we can exploit the books more so than the other sports due the 10cent lines and schedule. With a steady stream of games(some starting 10 hours after their last game ended) it seems that the books are playing catch-up more often than not and true junkies like me watching 3-4 games per day can stayahead of bullpen probs, key hitter slumps and all of the other good stuff. I can t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
