As a huge Yankee fan and a big baseball fan overall, here's my honest, if somewhat biased take on what they should / will do in the offseason, as the media is already buzzing.
In all honesty, I know every year far too many people who don't know enough about the game call for the head of Torre, but it doesn't make sense. Firing Torre will only lead to more sweeping changes as mentioned in an earlier post. Petitte won't resign if Torre is let go, and Posada and Mo will have serious reservations as well. That would leave serious holes in the team that free agency won't be able to fill.
Will Posada ever hit above .300 again? Hell no. We all know that. This was one of those fluke years. The guy is a lifetime .285 hitter and he's only getting older. Still, like Jeter, he is a bedrock for the youth to build on, especially the pitchers, and he should resign and end his career as a Yankee catcher and ultimately DH in another year or two.
Personally, I know Abreu is "soft" but he fits in perfectly with the philosophy. If possible, I think they should resign him for right; Melky stays in Center and Damon in left. Matsui is the odd-man out and probably DHs, though he looked shot this year.
Giambi needs to go in the worst way. Maybe an NL team would take him to play 1B and give them some power, like the Pads or Dodgers or something. Otherwise, he could DH for a team like the Angels or Twins. Look at Frank Thomas and Piazza; if they could do it, so can Giambi. Yanks eat some of the salary, but they get a young bat or middle of the road bullpen guy in return and it's worth it.
The big question seems to be A-Rod, though I think the question is more for those NOT living in NY. I honestly get the feeling he is coming back. At the moment, as ESPN reported, he has no "team." He's been a Mariner, a Ranger, and a Yankee. If he resigns with the Yanks for that 8 or 10 year deal he wants, he gets security and a place that would retire his number and create a monument to him when he retires. He'll be the biggest fish in the biggest pond for the next decade, break nearly every record, and have a new stadium filled year after year to see him do it. Plus, I honestly think a little bit of ego comes into it. A-Rod came to NY to win a championship; if he leaves now, he's a failure. I know half the world hates the Yanks, and they're dying to see him go, but I really don't see it.
As for the Rotation, if Petitte stays, we're in fine shape. Wang and Petitte, backed with Hughes and Kennedy, each another year into their big league careers. Mussina is making $11M in his final season, so you KNOW he's going to pitch, and if he's my 5, I'm fine with that. Bullpen-wise we'll hopefully keep Mo, along with Joba, Vizcaino, Veras, Farnesworth and Ohlendorf. Not amazing, I agree, but the first 2 are as reliable as you get, and you piece the rest together. Not everyone can have the luxury of Betancourt and Perez.
So really, there isn't a whole lot to be done. All bets are off if Torre is indeed fired, though my guess is that Cashman knows all of what I just posted above - or I'd so...it's his job. That's why the axe didn't fall today, as many expected. Cashman will back Joe in private to Steinbrenner's kids, and hopefully make George and the rest ultimately see a change would do more harm than good.
