"FoxSports.com reported that the Reds are interested in three players on the Colorado Rockies: center fielder Willy Taveras, catcher Yorvit Torrealba and third baseman Garrett Atkins. The Reds' interest in the players is believed to be in that order.
Reds general manager Walt Jocketty confirmed the two clubs had talked.
"We've talked to Colorado, but we've talked to a lot of different clubs. But that didn't get out," Jocketty said. "We've let clubs know our position. We're looking for catching, center field, shortstop and a right-handed RBI guy."
Taveras and Torrealba would fill two of the Reds' stated needs - center fielder and catcher.
The team's center field job is wide-open, and Chris Dickerson, Jerry Hairston Jr., Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper all are candidates. Hairston is a free agent, but the Reds have been negotiating with him.
Taveras, 27, led the majors in stolen bases with 68. But his on-base percentage was .308 and his slugging percentage was .296, lowest among players who qualified for the batting title. He hit .320 with a .367 on-base in 2007.
Taveras made $1.975 million this year and is arbitration-eligible.
Torrealba, 30, began the season as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher but lost his job to Chris Iannetta. Torrealba's season ended with knee surgery Aug. 25, and he finished with a .246 batting average.
Torrealba will make $3.5 million next season. He played for Reds manager Dusty Baker while with San Francisco.
Atkins, 28, hit .286 with 21 home runs and 99 RBI, but he benefited greatly from playing his home games at Coors Field. He hit .342 with a .903 on-base-plus-slugging percentage at home and .233 with a .661 OPS on the road. Atkins made $4.375 million this year and is eligible for arbitration.
Acquiring Atkins probably would result in the Reds trading Edwin Encarnacion or moving him to another position."
I haven't heard if this deal is dead or not. I'd love to have Taveras. Want to keep Encarnacion though!
