Major League Baseball (MLB) first implemented the rule to start extra innings with a runner on second base in the 2020 season . This was part of the league's health and safety protocols during the pandemic-shortened season. The rule was intended to shorten games and reduce player fatigue, particularly pitchers. It was initially a temporary measure but was later made permanent for regular season games starting in 2023.

 

I've had loses due to this boneheaded rule.
