Chicago has lost 11 of 13 and has the most losses in the American League with 55.
On Tuesday, the White Sox were limited to three hits but stayed afloat behind 5 1/3 strong innings from right-hander Mike Vasil. Arizona surged ahead with a three-run seventh inning that included RBI singles around a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
"We know there's more that needs to happen for us to turn the corner and accelerate some things," White Sox general manager Chris Getz said. "Overall, I feel pretty good about things. When you look at a record like we have, you are not too happy about it by any stretch. But there are some positives that we can hang our hat on and continue to move forward."
One bright spot? The occasional brilliance of a handful of young right-handers. Sean Burke, who gets the call Wednesday, has shined in spots but hopes to regroup from a shaky June to date.
Burke (3-7, 4.50 ERA) was 2-2 with a 2.73 ERA in six May appearances, including five starts. However, the rookie is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA in three starts this month.
Burke took a no-decision against St. Louis in the opener of a Thursday doubleheader. He spaced two runs (one earned) and four hits in 5 1/3 innings with two walks and seven strikeouts -- one shy of his career best.
Righty Zac Gallen (5-8, 5.60) will start for the Diamondbacks. Gallen picked up the victory Friday at Colorado despite allowing seven runs and 10 hits, including a pair of home runs, in five innings.
Gallen defeated the White Sox in his lone previous appearance against them. Pitching for the Miami Marlins as a rookie on July 24, 2019, he delivered seven shutout innings of two-hit ball with one walk, two hit batsmen and nine strikeouts.

The long wait is over for Toronto Blue Jays fans.
After spending three months on the injured list with right thumb inflammation, Max Scherzer will return to action Wednesday night against the Guardians in Cleveland.
Scherzer (0-0, 6.00 ERA) has made only one appearance since signing as a free agent with Toronto in the offseason, going three innings and allowing two runs and three hits against Baltimore on March 29.
The Guardians will send fellow right-hander Gavin Williams (5-3, 3.58 ERA) to the mound against the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer, who declined to speak with the media in Cleveland.
Williams will be a formidable foe as he looks to wrap up the best month of his three big-league seasons. Nicknamed the Big Rig, the 6-foot-6, 250-pounder has a 1.99 ERA over four starts in June, with a 1-0 record.
In two career appearances against the Blue Jays, both no-decisions, Williams has struck out 21 over 11 innings and owns a 1.64 ERA.

Rookie left-hander Colton Gordon (2-1, 4.54 ERA) has the starting assignment for the Astros on Wednesday. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over five innings on Thursday and did not factor into the decision of a 6-4, 10-inning road loss to the Athletics.
Season-ending injuries for starting right-handers Ronel Blanco and Hayden Wesneski opened the door for Gordon, who began the season with Triple-A Sugar Land, to contribute to the Astros' success. Gordon has issued five walks and struck out 34 in his first seven starts.
Gordon will make his first career start against the Phillies and his first interleague appearance.
Right-hander Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.61 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Phillies. He threw five shutout innings against the New York Mets on Friday but did not factor into the decision of a 10-2 victory after allowing four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Wheeler is 1-0 with a 1.06 ERA in three starts this month with 24 strikeouts across 17 innings.
Wheeler is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two career starts against the Astros. In his previous outing against Houston, Wheeler allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts over six innings but did not factor into the decision of a 3-2, 10-inning win on Aug. 26, 2024.

Two hot pitchers will go head-to-head for the first time in their careers when the visiting Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants continue a three-game series Wednesday night.
The same has been true of late with Wednesday's starter, right-hander Logan Webb (7-5, 2.49 ERA), who did not pitch when the Giants took two of three from the Marlins in Miami from May 30-June 1.
The 28-year-old has gone 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA in six career starts against the Marlins.
Since May 1, Cabrera, 27, has gone 2-1 with a 2.23 ERA in eight starts, striking out 43 and walking 15 in 40 1/3 innings.
Cabrera has never faced new Giants slugger Rafael Devers, whose 1-for-4 night in the series opener made him 6-for-27 (.222) since he was acquired from Boston earlier in the month.
