Why did they keep Lackey in for Bautista? Absolutely terrible 'pen management by Francona.
Yep that was what started ALL the issues.
Why leave him in when you have 2 good arms in Bard and Papelbon to close out a 3 run game. People will blame Papelbon for this shitshow but alot of blame should go to Francona for starting the 9th off with a horrendous decision.

everybody just shut up with your bitching. leaving lackey in the 9th with a 3 run lead and 90 pitches thrown is a no brainer. he let up the homer, so he gets immediately pulled, which is also the right move. this game was not mismanaged at all. papelbon blew it, point blank bottom line. you're a moron if you think lackey or francona are the reasons why they lost this game, a 2 run lead against a team you've never blown a save against, and he blew it.

Lackey had NEVER pitched into the 9th inning all year. So why the fuck start today when there was no need to? So far this year he went 8 innings once and his next longest outing was 7.1 innings. There was no need to push him into the 9th today with that lead and fresh arms in the pen.
So how about you practice what you preach and STFU!

lackey's one of the most proven vets in all of baseball (not saying he's great this year but he's as proven as they come), and both runs he'd allowed were off double plays that got him out of trouble. he had shown absolutely no signs of getting tired or getting into trouble all day, and was coasting the whole way through. this isn't a young guy that you have to baby at 90 pitches. the fact that he hadn't gone into the 9th yet this year has nothing to do with anything, he's done it many times throughout his career and has thrown a bunch of innings this year as well. not a single manager in all of major league baseball would tell you it was the wrong decision to leave him in with that situation.
i understand you lost your boston moneyline syddigs, i did too, let's just be honest and not blame it on john lackey.

Syd -- raems is right, innings are relatively meaningless. Pitch counts are important. Lackey is a workhouse, this was the first game in his last 10 that he DIDN'T throw over 100 pitches.

actually, having thrown just 98 pitches, Lackey should have been given at least 1 more batter. Francona panicked. It is not like Bautista hasn't been hitting homers off of everyone. And yes Papelbon was awful. He said he had been feeling out of it all day...something that he should have perhaps conveyed to Tito. This was the at least 12th time the BoSox had lost a game they led by at least 2 runs at some point and the 4th or 5th I believe they have lost having led after 8. The Yankees record when leading after 8? Something like 61-1 or some other ridiculous number. Fact is, heading to Texas, this was a KILLER! Could have gained a half game on the Rays. I doubt the Yanks will lose to Bruce Chen so 6 behind NY after tonight. Hopefully get 1 in Texas and finish a rather difficult 10 game trip 5-5. Fact is, Boston SHOULD have the pitching advantage the next 2 days and since Dice K was not so good his last time out all signs point to him having a good outing Sunday. An on the verge of cashing in their season Angels team comes to Fenway Tuesday and there is no reason Boston should not continue to dominate them. Pedey might be back next week and miraculously, through all the injuries, teh Red Sox are still within pissing distance of the playoffs. GO BOSTON

The Top 14 closers in the AL have a combined 88% save percentage this season. Cinnabon is at 85%, which is only one blown save away from being average. Today was that blown save.
