Lefty Max FRIED, has started 20 games this year and by my count tossed 5 bad outings TWO his 9 HOME starts, were bad outings. He has an awesome WHIP and ERA, although his numbers are better than that on the road but actually WORSE at home.
He returned after the ASB following a 2 month stint on IL, tossing 11 games with 2 bad outings, but great run support allowed the Yankees to win one of those.
The Yankees are 6 - 4 in Fried's HOME starts...

Nick Martinez is an ELITE starter, with a low WHIP stat and low ERA...but his numbers are even better ON THE ROAD! He's started 31 games this year but by my count only tossed 4 bad outings (statistically/his performance) June 03, July 31, Aug 18, and last game vs Philly....the team lost all 4.
From 16 ROAD starts, only one bad outing! (loss)
The RAYS are 11 - 5 in his ROAD starts, including 2 - 1 against NYY!
In each of his 3 previous bad outings, he rebounded with excellent outings and the RAYS responded with 3 winners.
ELITE starters very rarely pitch two B-2-B bad outings. They almost always repbound with a very good performance and usually his team wins it.
Martinez is coming off a bad outing... one of only 4 from 31 starts ...

And yet, oddly, the Yankees are HUGE Home favs . . .

Clearly this matchup implies a pitcher's duel and very low scoring . . .
Total in G1 was 1 run and G2 7 runs.....the under looks tempting

And in the game 2 total of 7 total runs, 3 came off Yankee errors
The teams combined for only 4 ER . . .

This STARTER is riding a tenuous 14-gameHOT STREAK,
WITHOUT a BAD outing in that streak .....YET!
...but this should be anticipated to end at anytime!!!
Make no mistake, this dude and others I will identify in the future are GOOD starters - some of them exceptional! HOWEVER, probability says "consecutive streaks won't last long" especially AFTER 7 straight w/o a "bad outing"....All GOOD pitchers will, from time to time, have an "off" day and get roughed up - sometimes mauled - before they resume their stellar pitching performances again. Best to avoid!
CAVEAT: even if the starter has a "badouting" doesn't guarantee his team will lose! It just seriously weakens their chances! But his team's bats could come thru with a lot of runs to save the day.....maybe! You decide.
