DANE: I have been up to my eyeballs in work stuff and family stuff for the past month, and have done little horse playing as of late.

 

Hopefully, this situation will give me some breathing room soon so I can get back into the swing of things. Haven't heard from BULL in a while.

I am sure you all know horse racing is a tough sport, nobody really cares for it (TV wise) does anybody really listen to the Analyst on tvg-hrtv (no) I could care less what they say, you are still going to bet your horses not there’s, but maybe something they say makes you in look in another direction, all the hosts and Analyst have to jell together and it lookslike they do or the show would be worse than it is. I use to love going to the track, I still go once in awhile, but you get these people screaming all thru the race for a 4/5 that wins by 7 and they say, there the man. it gets tiring. (But fun to watch) I am glad, no grateful the horse racing is on TV and we can bet online, now put a casino in the track, I no longer have a home phone #.. Now remember bet with your head--not over it

Monte:  I have the NJ OTB account, I've had no trouble with it or my other 2, one in NYC, but that's on the ropes, Blumberg is threatening to close them because of the way because the idiots in NYC have most of the money going to NY STATE instead of NYC, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, I'd rather have the NYRA tracks instead of the NYC OTB tracks, they offer International Racing, while the 3 accounts I have, don't.  But if you hit an "uncle sam" I always get a W2-G, but I have no problem with that, I'll report it at tax time, what's fair is fair. I can't remember the last time I was at a racetrack, must be 10 years.  As far as Pinny goes, I heard nothing but great things about it, like I said though, they are investing in US casinos, so, that's a conflict of interest, this country banned most offshore betting, however, I hear there are some cracks you can get an account with some, but I'm not that brave, I like to do thing legit.

Bull:   The host I think you're talking about is Rich Perloff, he is a super handicapper, he's had a few bad days when I've watched him, but he's cool about it, not like Hines or Carothers, whining about how they got beat, personally, those 2 should just sit themselves in a room together and talk each other to death, they really suck.  Rich is the thin gray haired guy, great speaking voice and talks TO YOU and NOT AT YOU, he's good, agree.  I get Thoroughbred Action on Fox at 5:30pm every night and sometimes at midnight or later, but I sure as hell don't want to see it the next day at 10 or 11am, right in the middle of an International simulcast from Ireland and the UK, that blows.  One other thing Bull, Gulfstream is in the Stronach/Magna stranglehold, you won't see Gulfstream on TVG, I'm hoping they'll still have the Fairgrounds.

Since Fairgrounds is owned by Churchill Downs they won't be on TVG.  All CD tracks went to HRTV.  (Unless, of course, FG had a previous contract with TVG, then they would have to honor that until it expired but I doubt that this late in the game.)  Churchill has owned FG two years, ever since they restarted running at NOLA.

matchbook and wsex for sports. . . hrtv and tvg remind me a bit of those idiots in open wheel car racing (cart and irl) who drove their sport into the ground by bickering back and forth and creating two lesser options.  while nascar has done well to capitalize, open wheel racing used to lead the way.  Now sportscenter leads with nascar on a sunday night show during football season. 

 

perhaps cooler heads will prevail and the powers will realize that all benefit if the horse player has wide access to the best product on a consistent basis.  part of the problem has been newscorp's stake in tvg and direct tv.  that changes in the next few months when liberty media (a gambling friendly entity) takes over the newscorp share of direct tv.

 

i would have two horse racing channels, one with the best product and best distribution and a secondary channel for the rest of the product.  market forces will drive distribution,  some markets (cable dma's) can support two channels while most cannot, thus the best product gets the most distribution.  as for the announcers/hosts,  tvg and hrtv will always be in a catch 22,  if you "play" to the serious horse player, you limit your ability to attract a new audience and hence new handle.  and if you dumb it down, you piss off the back bone of your audience.  i prefer option #1, i don't really think a horse racing channel is the way you attract new customers to the track.  you do that at the track or on the many national telecasts.

 

 

Hi 3825, I've never seen HRTV, so I can't comment on the hosts or how the telecasts are presented, is it the same format as TVG?  I remember a few years back when we first started receiving it, I thought that it was a major event for the horse racing industry, more people would take interest, etc., instead, its turned into a gab fest with hosts that are egotists, make stupid picks or way off the wall picks with horses that have little or no chance, go off at huge odds and finish at the ass end, we all do this but their's is constant, very few good handicappers at TVG.  The ones I consider good are Vic Stauffer, the announcer currently at Hollywood Park, this guy is good, following him I'd add Rich Perloff, Frank Lyons, Simon Bray, Jill Byrne, the others I wouldn't give a rat's ass for their opinions.  Like I said above, Frank Stronach and his Magna Entertainment are greedy, he runs HRTV, and he wants to charge Directv outrageous rates to carry his signal, that's why it's not offered on Directv, sad, instead of him letting them carry his signal at the usual going rates, and also which would help promote horse racing,  he chooses this avenue, sad, and the sadder part is that he's losing money in the millions of dollars with his product and he's a billionaire, go figure.  I wouldn't use an offshore book for horse racing though, I'd want it exclusively for sports betting, but I'm not that brave to join one, too many restrictions and threats on US players by the government, so, I'll do without for now unless something really positive come up.  Thanks for your input, later.

The next two people you will see hit the metworks from these two cable channels is Laffit Pincay and Christina Olivares.  Christina is a natural interviewer and would fit ESPN well and up the class level of some of the bimbos doing sideline there.

Jill Byrne is a good capper and gives out good info.   I like her the best.

I think you should get together with Roger Stein. He vents on them regularly and I don't think he has ever picked a winner in the 6 months I listened to his broadcast.

 

I must be the only one here that finds TVG very entertaining and informative. Hines can spot a horse out of the post parade with sometimes uncanny regularity. I have lost lots of money betting my own handicapping or the smart money on the track & ignoring the crew from TVG. If you watch the interviews you can sometimes pick up great information from the trainers just before the races.

 

Dave Weaver is a crack up (I play cards with him locally). I love it when they show himself draped with flowers in lying position after taking a bath on a horse.

 

 

My biggest complaint with their broadcast would be their camera is on the wrong side of the post parade way too often, same as HRTV. I see no point in watching the out riders

 

 

you would probably like hrtv, a lot more down to earth; they filter out a lot of the b.s. that is on tvg.  mostly serious talk whereas tvg tries (poorly)  to "entertain"

I don't know who Priscilla H. was/is, nor do I know who Roger Stein is. 

 

Dave Weaver, Gary Seibel, Rich Perloff, Frank Lyons, Simon Bray, Christina Oliveras, Jill Byrne, Vic Stauffer, Greg Wolf, Frank Miramahdi, Ken Rudolph are all ok by me.

 

Nick Hines, Matt Carothers, and even Todd Shrupp got annoying, these are my top "MUTE BUTTON CANDIDATES", I still watch the TVG channel, don't get me wrong, I want to see the races, I just use my mute button a lot.

 

In my opinion, Vic Stauffer, Rich Perloff, Frank Miramahdi and Jill Byrne are the best handicappers, especially Jill, when she's doing the paddock and views the horses up close, she's picked some real longshots as do the others above, they're an excellent watch

Roger Stein is a fairly well known trainer on the west coast. He claims TVG is ruining the sport, not the corruption, excessive taxes and overhead costs the public pays.

 

I would say 11-3 is not a bad scorecard...Carothers & Hines may be annoying, but when they pick out a 13-1 shot as their best bet of the day, for some obscure far fetched reasoning, I give em credit.

Hitting the mute button when the guys that annoy you are hosting, shouldn't take much effort at all. The show can make you a little money in a sport that is difficult to beat.
