You are kind of right... but you did not really think it through.  YES "vegas" can take a beating on a particular game or weekend.  Books are net winners or losers all the time.  If managed properly of course they come out way ahead in the longer run.

Yes the sprortsbook is a loss-leader for the casino industry in vegas.

But as for "vegas" setting trap lines... vegas does not set any lines.  The major offshore books set the lines and vegas follows.  As for the linesmakers for offshores, yes they bait lines all day every day.

there is a REASON why in most Las Vegas casinos 90% of the floor space is slots and vids. the house sets the machine's control chip to payout WHATEVER they WANT. as I said in another thread, they are stone cold TIGHT the last three months at the local joints out here (and probably even WORSE on the strip) since the recession really hit last fall. their just NOT getting the play they used to and are trying to make up the shortfall by just tearing the addicted players ASS.

You are 100% correct on this "video crack" is something that I have heard it called...

In the late 1970s and early 1980s there was study that looked at the things in gambling that people liked in the games they played and they came up with four major characteristics...

1. Fast outcome, the faster the better 

2. Ability to change bets, the more choices the better... of course with later they made better payouts for max bet encouraging people to always play that so even when they won at smaller bets they woudl feel like they lose because they could have gone max bet and won alot more

3. Getting lost in the game...  So games that required alot of social interaction and distractions got people out of the trance...

4.  Appearance of perception of a strategy...  So even though all gambling is based on weighted odds on a random event, if the game could appear that your actions made a difference in the game play, people would develop their own strategy and "system"...

So they took the data and they created video poker which using a random number generator chip where the outcome of the next hand is independent of the last hands... Thats I why I love it when people insist to me that they are "due" on a machine that is basically just flipping a coin that is slightly weighted on one side...

If you think Vegas odds are bad try indian reservations, if you think indian casinos are bad, try state run video lottery machines...  It just gets worse and worse...

It is funny that at covers so much time is devoted to "teasers/parlays are for suckers", "fade public vs fading the public is for suckers", "line movement", "trends" etc...  But if you look at it from the standpoint of the bigger picture it is all stupid...

The problem is that you assume that because I am against white-trash wellfare parasites and the liberals who support them that some how I must be ignorant and uneducated...  But if those lazy trailor trash would just get a job instead of waiting for their disability claim to come through for the government to pay off their debt and bail them out, perhaps social security would not even be an issue in this country...

Get an education, get a job, work, make money... It is time to cut the fat... literally... as these turkey pot pie/Mcdonalds eating parasites are also the morbidly obese population of this country and now with Obama and universal health care,  I will have to pay for their medical bills for their not only their false claims to get their pain medication, but their real problems with their being morbidly obese such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood preassue, COPD, and lung cancer from the cigarettes...

So it does not matter if McCain or Obama won, we all lose because of the real problem of these people in our country...  Its not racist, it is simply and observation of reality while others talk politics...
