Why can’t old people die with dignity?

My friend’s great uncle is 85 and has cancer.  The guy doesn’t have any money so my friend’s mom and dad are picking up the bills.  Based on what my friend is telling me his mom and dad are spending tens of thousands of dollars just so this guy will have a CHANCE at clinging to life a couple more years.  My friend’s family isn’t poor but their life savings is taking a major hit.  And to top it all off my friend said this guy was a real asshole and his sister cut him off long ago.

So my question is: if you were 85 years old and had 6 months to live would you want your family to eat through most of their life savings just so you could have a shot at living a few more (probably miserable) years?

I certainly wouldn’t.

I have no idea, but I do know they are paying for him to be treated at the top rated hospital for cancer treatment in the country.

I could ask my friend next time I talk to him, but I’d rather not bring it up.  He’s pretty stressed out about his parents blowing most of their life savings on an 85 year old asshole that’s probably just going to end up dying within the next few years regardless.

IMO depends on quality of life-

About 15 yrs ago my mom was dx with pancreatic cancer- she never drank,smoke, etc-

Went through 2 surgeries for a miserable disease and course- with dismal survival rates-however, she had 1.5 years of quality life afterwards, traveled, saw her grandkids more,etc.-some would have argued against the surgeries ,etc- but for her it gave her a good year and a half-so I think it was worth it-

Exactly my view on the subject and a very similar experience.

Nobody in this place knows more about death and suffering than Dsn, I can promise you that.

No one is saying people shouldn’t be able to spend their money on whatever they want.  He’s worried about his good natured parents blowing their life savings on an asshole that’s probably going to end up dying within a few years regardless of whether they blow their money or not.

I mean who would want their parents to have to push back retirement another 10+ years (if they are even able to retire at all)?

And my friend is much better off than his parents are.  Trust me, he’s not worried about his inheritance.  He’s not the type anyway.
