Last night I was out at the bar with some friends. We got into a pretty funny argument over this hypothetical question.
Here are the rules:
You recruit 10 of your Male Friends and put together the best basketball team you can come up with. You can and should recruit the most athletic guys you know. However, anyone that's ever played college hoops does not qualify
After selecting the 10, you hire a seasoned coach and get 6 months to get in shape, practice, and prepare
You then face off against the UConn Huskies women's basketball team
Who wins this game?

In college one of my room-mates was a pretty sick former high school athlete who passed up athletic scholarships from smaller schools to go to school at a better college (University of Wisconsin Madison).
We used to play a lot of pickup bball and him and some of the better players at the pickup games got recruited to scrimmage the girls team regularly. As a reward they got free athletic gear and tickets etc. The group he balled with vs the girls was comprised mostly of former high school bball players, some of whom could have played at small colleges or walked on at larger schools, but NO current D1 bball players. My friend said the guys would beat the girls by 20 EVERYTIME and usually they went half speed to not embarrass the girls. UW girls aren't some powerhouse like Tennessee obv, but still a legit D1 school.
Point being.......Guys win EVERY Time. Sorry ladies.

Men for sure.....little story:

In this scenario, I'd cap the UCONN Women's Team as -3
I played regularly against the UCLA women's team when I was there at school because my roommate dated the starting PG, so we would run scout team all the time.
Those girls could play. They weren't as athletic, but they are fantastic open shooters, great passers, and fundamentally sound.

Salty, that's the why the men get a seasoned coach and 6 months to get in shape and practice. During this time, they can learn the offensive and defensive plays
Women are starting to get some votes
Men:4 Women:3

I like how Kapono put a line on the game: Women -3
Personally, I think the Men would win. I looked at Uconn's roster and they have one chick that is 6'5 and 2 that are 6'3. I have a buddy that is 6'6 and two others that are 6'4 -
I'd throw them in at center and power forward and they'd gobble up all the rebounds.
I'd put the line at Men -10
so with my vote, it makes it
Men: 5
Women: 3

My story is similar to EddieGordo. I went to La Tech in the early 90's. They had one of the best ladies programs in the country. I'm not that good but some of the guys I played with were. In pick-up games we would usually beat them probably 7 out of 10 times. Some of those girls played in the WNBA.

I'd say men - assuming that they are capable and have a height advantage. 5 guys that are 5'10 and not good athletes would probably get creamed, but if every guy was 6'3 or taller with moderate basketball skills, the guys would out muscle them and score in the paint any time they wanted to.

In the scenario that Kaufee proposed you're picking your ten best athletes among your group of friends. If you have a relatively decent sized group of friends (say include all former high school and College friends) you could easily get a couple of 6'3+ athletic guys, and a few former high school b-ball players. If you had enough height, and some guys who can shoot, and all of your ten are decent athletes, I'd have to put that line at guys -12 or so in a regulation college Bball game. All you'd have to worry about would be closing out on jump shots imo

This thread or a variant of this comes up again and again...
Remember asking if the men were covers members?
With that said... in my experience of playing pick up with both male and female college players is that they dont try very hard playing pick up... So I think stories about people playing pick up is irrelevant...
In a real game the fundamentals, team work and knowing how to function as a unit to be competitive will give the UConn ladies the advantage...

I agree with the size aspect
I think the advantage that male selected team could have also is age and
experience... getting a team in their late 20s or early 30s should beat
college males (who dont play college ball)...
I used to play pick up with a group of guys (some played college
division III) and most were in their 30s and some early 40s and in a
"winner stays on" pick up game against mostly college aged students we would
stay on all night and rotating 7 or 8 players...
alot of it was basketball IQ but it also helped that our front line was
6'8", 6'7", 6'5" and a rotating a 6'2" guy who was like white version big
baby... There was always seemed to be some sort of a mismatch down low
to expose... and the best shooter was 6'4"...
They recruited players like me to be like a randy brown/tyronne lue type of roll to match up with the younger and quicker players and basically just follow them around and stay in their way... and make shots when wide open... they did the rest because some of them had been playing with/against each other for over 30 years (two sets of brothers)...
I think that this group could be competitive against the UConn women, but disqualified because 3 of them played college...but at this point the oldest guy must be pushing 50....
