i started the thread and i did order the pizza, total was $14.08, driver was a chinese guy who looked like he really needed the gig, i had a 20 in my hand and thought long and hard about saying keep the change cos he probably needs every buck he can get but its a fucking pizza at the end of the day so I asked for $3 back.
so essentially a 3 dollar tip minus that 8 cents... thats very reasonable.
first of all anyone who thinks that these pizza delivery guys make their money off tips are definitely wrong. I would think that they dont deliver more than a few pizzas to an individuals house which maybe just maybe exceeds 30 dollars for a dinner from a pizza place and that is pretty expensive at a pizza parlor. that would be a tip of about 6 or 7 dollars. anyone paying more than 50 dollars for a dinner at a pizza parlor that is eating dinner at a residential house is most likely driving their ass to the restaurant to pick the pizza;s up. They will not pay the extra 12 dollars on the 50 dollar tab (at least i would drive to the place to pick it up rather than call for the delivery.
But my point is that the salary of the delivering pizzas guys is mostly comprised of a base salary for how many hours they work and maybe incentives for how many houses they deliver the pizzas to; not the amount of tips they recieve from their clients.
I go deep sea fishing in North Carolina and i pay for a half day charter which is about 60-70 dollars normally and the fisherman that help with the fishing rods and making sure the lines are working correctly and all the other steps to properly fish make a fairly decent amount of money off tips and are usually given 20-30 dollars, sometimes more depending on how many fish we catch.

I delivered pizzas for too long, and I completely disagree that a tip is always warranted. I delivered late pizzas at a decent rate at my last job due to COMPANY incompetence and regular understaffing. And I finally got fed up with telling the company to hire more people in order to keep from driving in every direction. When the customers rightfully complained, I let my COMPANY know my displeasure, but to no avail. And if the customer is frustrated, as a REPRESENTATIVE of the company, I accept full responsibility and deserve NO tip.
Now this is the kind of guy I would tip well.
Osirus13 must live in some Scandinavian country with cradle-to-grave social benefits to be thinking like that. A gratuity is not something given for nothing. Good service = good tip. Bad service = bad/no tip. Not too hard, wasn't it?
And hell, what's with all these tipping threads in Gen. Discussion? I counted 4, not including tikitom's 2 threads on "tipping tips."

15% is NOT the fucking standard cheapass. Its 20%. That is the standard
Learn to read, you illiterate punk.
I always tip 20-25%.
The standard is 15%... I have 2 cousins to own restaurants and had been waitresses their whole life before opening their own establishments. They have told me 15% is customary and 20% is preferred.
So once again. If you provide shitty service and have a shitty attitude you DO NOT DESERVE 15%. And as I said before I can count on one hand that I have not left 20-25% for a tip. I let a lot of things go with waiters and waitresses becasue I know most is out of their control. But when you SUCK at your job and have a SHITTY attitude you dont even deserve 15%.
One time I left the casino and had won around 5k. Went to a pretty nice restaurant around the area. I was dressed in sweats and a tshirt. Was with 2 friends and we ended up havign a $175 bill. The waitress sucked and I think its because she looked at the way we were dressed and we were younger than most of the other patrons in the place. She came ONE time during the 45-50 minutes we were there to even ask if we needed refills. The hostess actually got us refills during our dinner at one point because we never saw the waitress come back around to our table but she was at all the table around ours. When the check came I left the waitress $1 and on my way out gave $40 to the hostess and told her thank you for helping and serving us because our waitress did nothing.
It also wasn't just her not coming back to the table or anything like that. She had a bad attitude from the beginning and me and my 2 friends got the vibe she did not want to serve us, probably thinking we weren't going to leave a good tip because we were dressed like scrubs. Well IMO she got what she deserved. She seemed like a good waitress to the tables around our table but she did nothing but bring the food out to our table and even then she had a bitchy attitude.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't tip at all just like when I go to Jamba Juice. Everyone has a beg/tip cup out now thinking that they should try to hustle some tip for something that they are already paid to do.

Funny thing is most waiters and waitresses are douche bags complete fucks that think they deserve a tip just for doing their jobs. I always tip but l have left many a restaurant thinking that they would be better served to smack them upside the head for being a douche. I understand completely when Tjohnsont questions the whole process.
Maybe if their employer would pay them a decent wage instead of exploiting the fucks then l wouldnt have to waste my hard earned money paying for these douches.

Nevertheless, l leave at least 15% on anything under 200 bucks. Over $200 bill l base it on amount of work done, and how long l stayed at the establishment. If I am at a place and do a quick lunch with some expensive wine and we stay for 1 hour and bill comes out to 500 bucks l will likely tip a 50. If it is dinner and we spend 2-3 hours and bill is 500 bucks l will tip 80-100 bucks. So I wont just tip 15% cuz its an imaginary standard. If you think about it how many people actually earn 50/hr so that l would tip a waiter/waitress 50 bucks for sitting down 1 hour in their section.

Why put the blame on the patrons- we are not their employers- the argument is if the employers have to pay them more then our menu price will be more. That's great charge me 20% more for my meal and I won't have to pay tip- I don't care. Either way, it comes out the same at the end and then the waiter can blame the owner for being the cheap @ss and not the guests. I come to eat and not be labeled by the hostess and then the waiter and then once I leave tip, get labeled again by these people. They should be happy that we are eating at their establishment in the first place cuz without us eating out, they will sit at home and not get paid minimum wage much less a fat tip.

More like $50 an hour plus their minimum wage. And that is only for your table- most waiters are gonna wait 3 or more table at the same time. Take 3 table like yours and that's about $160 an hour. Take 5 strong hours and that waiter is walking away with about $800 for about 8 hours work.

i disagree with you... what i was saying is that if its everyones fault BUT the driver then you should get a tip. them tipping is going directly to you, and if you are delivering pizzas properly, doing your best then they should tip you.. the tip is for the driver. As for complaints about the food or whatever or if it takes a long time but you have a legit excuse about time then they should complain to the company themselves ie call them up and so on and say we arent going to buy pizza from you anymore..

if the driver is doing his job to the best of his ability, why should he be punished (no tip) for other peoples (his company) stupidity especially if the driver is being sincere and apologetic explaining the crappy service his company caused like the time it took to deliver the pizza or the quality of the pizza... im just saying if its not the drivers fault then he shouldnt be punished...
if you work at lets say Dell or IBM and you do your part perfectly, should you get less salary cause someone else working on something else of the product fucked it up?

You should always tip at least 15% unless the server is intentionally giving you bad service. I've worked in the service industry in Vegas. At most places servers have gotta tip out at least 2 or 3 other people such as bartenders/bussers/runners etc. based on a percentage of what they sell which is probably about 5% of their sales for the night. Some places you gotta claim a percentage of your tips for taxes as well. A couple bad tips on big checks and they are claiming more for tax purposes than what they are actually making. If the service is good at least 20% no matter how many people or how long you're there. If you don't wanna tip stay home or go to McDonald's.

I doubt waiters are claiming more on taxes than they receive unless they are real dumb and I doubt that. I wouldn't be suprised they claim they recieve less than 20 percent of the actual tip they receive. So great, they actually make another 20% on top of what we tip them.
Isn't that great that we all have some hard and fast rule so we don't undertip the waiter but the waiter is screwing the tax man.

maybe $3 if the guy is nice or particularly pitiful.
$3 for me. I'm a 20 percent guy no matter what unless the service is absolutely horrible....then it's 10 percent. I have 3 sisters and all worked as waitresses through high school and college. I've been trained.
That's the deal... you either know, or you don't; either you know how much it sucks to be in the service industry or you have no idea.
