it is still disrespectful though. and it neutralizes the thought of "Southern Hospitality." I went to school in North Carolina. I loved my time there but people made it hard for me to fit in by calling me a yank and a northerner or a damn yankee, etc... It is not very hospitable to immediately differentiate people for such a stupid reason. it isn't funny and it has no bearing on anyone's life anymore.

I agree. It comes across as disrespectful and especially to someone like me who has never lived anywhere besides up North my whole life and then move to somewhere as a total stranger and immediately get labeled as a yankee. And it really isn't funny and just sounds dumb. I honestly cannot make hardly any friends down here because of the close mindedness of a lot of people down here. And it does ruin the whole "southern hospitality" because it makes it seem like everyone is real nice but behind your back they are thinking how they hate you because you live up North which is completely stupid.

Wow that is so nice of you to be friends with yankees. Maybe that is a term that needs to slide out of the southern dialogue.

A humorous aphorism attributed to E.B. White summarizes these distinctions:
So I guess it is not really that derogatory. It just seemed like it was to me cause I have never been called that before but I am also in a different part of the country now so I guess I gotta get used to different terms and stuff.

you are right. I think anywhere I moved I could find something to complain about.

I know there is no harm meant, no offense meant, etc... It is not that big of a deal. But as you've heard before, "if you have to say 'no disrespect is meant,' then what you're saying is disrespectful."
It is an unnecessary label. I would get introduced at parties as, hey this guy's a yankee. then people that are from the south immediately consider me an outsider. why can't i walk into a party on an even keel? it puts pressure on you to fit in, when it could be a lot easier if you don't label someone immediately. sure, yankee isn't a bad word, and calling people that may not be disrespectful. it is the labeling and the ostracizing that is disrespectful
