Have any of you guys been on a good/bad ski vacation, or regularly go somewhere to ski?

Here is a little background and some expectations.  My chick and I are going to plan a ski vacation the week after Christmas.  I have been skiing very few times and she has never been skiing, but is excited about the experience.  So, we are looking for somewhere very beginner friendly.  We are also looking for something all inclusive, if that even exists in this situation.  We are looking for a resort or lodge that is close to the ski lifts and close to the nightlife (dinning and shopping).  We are also looking for transport from an airport to our destination.  Since most skiing is away from the airports we were wondering if there were lodges that offer that kind of transport.  I was also curious about lift tickets, equipment rentals, an any other stuff I may be forgetting.

Thanks in advance guys.  My chick and I's New Year's Eve celebrations have lacked luster the last few years so this year we made a New Year's resolution to have a great New Year's Eve.  We are both excited, but need some insight.

Well you could stay at my house.  We are about 10 minutes from Alta and Snowbird.

But my kids would drive you crazy.

Sure I am a bit of a homer on this subject, but my vote would be for Park City.

Park City is 30 minutes from SLC Airport a Delta Hub.   The easiest in/out of any ski resort in North America.

Huge resort with all ranges of difficulty.  Great snowboard park there as well.  The resort is right up against the town.  Great nightlife especially during the week between Christmas and New Years.  Probably get a band or two on the level of G Love or The Used playing on New Years Eve.

Several real nice properties that are truely "ski in/ski out" where the ski lift is closer to your room than the hotel lobby.   A lot depends on your budget.

Hit me up if you decide on Park City.  I can give you several good reccomendations.

Colorado has the best skiing in the states. Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride, Vail. Any of those are great ski resorts with plenty of nightlife.

Aspen is possible the best due to the vicinity of the 4 mountains in the area. Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Snowmass, and the Aspen Highlands mountain are all very close and you can take a shuttle for free from any of the resorts to the next.

I've been to Tahoe and Breckenridge both great ski wise and they both have a good night life.  Breckenridge has lots of bars and Tahoe has casinos.

For the criteria that you want, you should come to Colorado. Breckenridge and Vail are most likely to fit your needs,  they both offer all levels of skiing.  My personal fav is by far Vail.  Great place.

I've been to Vail, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Winter Park, Steamboat, Aspen, Copper, Breckenridge, and Loveland Pass.

I liked Vail (back bowls are amazing), but I found myself having to work to get to chairlifts at the bottom of hills.  Scenery is awesome.  Arapahoe was OK....west wall amazing, but a lot of it is above the tree line (not very picturesque).  Copper and Breck both solid.  Winter Park OK.  Loveland probably my least favorite.  Keystone has by far been my favorite.  Lots of options including night skiing and a couple of mountains.

Steamboat is kind of in its own area.  I put that around Copper and Breck in terms of actual skiing.  Nice village.

Aspen is fun, but it's expensive (they all are, really).

My fav. in CO is Keystone followed by Vail/Beaver Creek.  Breck and Copper after that.

Steamboat is a LONG way from Denver as well.  Copper and Breck are much closer (65-75 miles).  Vail isn't much further.

Not sure where you live, but one of my favorite east coast spots is Snowshoe, WV. You just can't beat the resort.

just got back from the travel agent

looking really hard at park city.  close to the airport and very attractive price.  i've heard good things from here as well as other places.

how is the nightlife?  the resort we are looking at is the park city peaks?  any info as far as proximity to the slopes and downtown?

    OC - fill me in...

PC Peaks is about a 3 minute shuttle ride to the base of the resort and probably 5 minutes to main street.   Pretty good location but others are a little better.  Keep looking.

Night life is real good especially that week.  You will have a great time.  Not sure of the deal that you are getting at the Peaks so even if you do stay there, it isnt much trouble to get anywhere you want to be.

What resorts do you suggest OC?

I think I would like to be able to walk to the slopes as opposed to shuttle.  I don't mind taking a cab or shuttle downtown.

Park City nightlife is great, but has character/not just a party place like a lot of other ski areas. Cool as hell people there, and I guarantee it that you'd be pleased with it.
