question: Anyone ever had a root canal go bad?

I had a root canal a while back. I now wish the tooth was just pulled out and avoided that shit. I now suspect that the porcelain crown that got put on it may be needing replaced. Have recently researched on it and didn't realize these fucking things had a shelf life and thought they lasted forever. Like I said, tooth should've just been pulled and fuck the root canal shit.

It all depends on the dentist.  If you have an idiot in a big hurry working on your mouth, expect problems.  I had a root canal with a porcelain crown done twenty years ago and it is still solid. 

Some teeth are more important to save than others because of location.  In later years they may be needed to anchor a partial plate.  You never know, so it might be wise to save the tooth instead of yanking it out.

make SURE you get one prescription for pain--you probably won't need this, but you'll want the meds if you hurt. 

and get another prescription for infection--regardless of sterilization procedures you will almost always get some bacteria into the hole before the temporary crown is installed, and it will cause great pain and will feel like a golfball is jammed in there due to the swelling and pus that starts about 24 hours later if no penicillin-like med is taken.  and use ALL of this med up--usu about 7 days worth.

Me bro ... This is what happened.  I was in high school at the time (I lived overseas on a military base) and my mouth hurt so much I went to the late afternoon emergency dental clinic on base.  To make a long story short, they decided they could only do a PARTIAL root canal at that time and that I would have to get the FULL version during regular hours.  I was like what the f*ck?  What's a partial root canal?  Anyways, the regular root canal eventually FAILED and they said I had two options.  Pull the tooth or have surgery where they cut open the side of my gums and fix things up.  The only problem is there's a chance they hit a nerve and the side of the cheek goes numb for the rest of my life.  I said no thanks pull the damn tooth.  So now I've had gum problems where the tooth use to sit ever since.  Lucky me .  Good luck to you.  That was exactly 20 years ago for me.

Good dentists are very cautious with infections both pre and post.

I had one fuck fave put me on nothing before a root canal. The post infection pain I went through was very bad. I lost 17 pounds in 7 days. Couldn't.

Tell the guy that infection is a concern for you if he does not mention it.

I had  two root canals on my front two teeth two years after taking a bad hop to the mouth which killed the nerves. The night after the procedure my face swelled to epic proportions. I could feel my pulse in my face. I went back to the dentist. The receptionist was taking my info when the dentist walked in. He immediately cleared a room and ended up drilling into the tooth again and putting a tube made out of balloon like material in the hole. YES!!!! Dude all I can tell you is that shit hurt so bad I broke the arm on the chair. Sometimes if they are rushing the novacaine needs more time to numb you. What the FUCK did they do before anesthesia and numbing agents!!!
