Hey guys, try to keep this as short as possible, but heres story:
Was at work with three others when two males robbed store at gunpoint...its a phone store and they took alot of cellphones...we were held in back room at gunpoint by one guy while other took phones out...
Now, I have never seen these guys before or talked with these guys either..no involvement whatsoever...Of course the detectives wanted to talk to the four of us and get ouor statemnet and stories...
This was like eight weeks ago...now yesterday, w went to police station to give our statement again, and this time, detective told me that I was the guy that gave them the signal to come in and that I talked to them on phone, etc..
So I'm telling this detective, no, i had no involvement, none...bottom line is he asked would i be willing to take lie detector test? I said absolutely, to clear my name..
Now that I went home and thought about it, I'm wondering if thats a good idea..they have nothing to hold me to this, or any of us, and only thing they have is the statements form guys who robbed store, who singled me out...
So do I take the lie detector test or not???

If you had nothing to do with it they're going to need more evidence than some supposed hand signal. Why would you take a lie detector test which could produce false positives that would give them more circumstantial evidence?

No chance do you take a lie detector test. And don't waste money on a lawyer right now. Tell 'em to charge you or leave you alone. And if they charge you, then call an attorney.
No different than the cop who pulls you over for speeding and says, "you don't mind if I take a look in the car, do you?"
"Sorry sir, but I do mind as I don't want to give up my Constitutional rights."
They are fishing. Screw them.

tell them to charge you or leave you alone if you are reading for a part on law and order. but if this is a real life example, don't do that. the cop has all of the power at this stage, don't entice them to make your life more difficult than it needs to be. if you need examples, i can provide some.

Public Defender is the way to go. They are more compentent on average than a cheap lawayer. And there is no reason to hire a top notch lawayer for this.

I'd say call a lawyer, who would likely advise you not to take the test I imagine.
That being said, if it were me and I had nothing to hide, I'd take the test. Lie detector tests results are (at least in California) inadmissible in Court so there's no worry about it coming to bite you in the ass later if you were in Cali.

He can't get assigned a PD unless he's been charged with a crime, and it doesn't appear that he has yet. He'd have to go private defense attorney or nothing until/unless he gets charged in the future

ok, here are two examples that should give you some idea of what you're dealing with when you are dealing with cops who either think you committed a crime, regardless of the evidence, or lack thereof, or cops who want information from you about a crime you have nothing to do with and may know little about.
Example 1: girlfriend is at home with boyfriend and his friends. that night, boyfriend asks girlfriend if he can borrow her car. she often lets him use his car so she didn't think anything of it and agreed. a few hours later boyfriend comes back and is acting weird with his friends. on the news, she sees a story about a drug deal gone bad in a nearby city where 3 people were killed. after boyfriend and friends see the story, they start acting strange and making some suspicious comments in front of her. she's scared shitless. boyfriend doesn't admit to anything says he'll kill her and her family if she talks to police.
within a few days, girlfriend gets a visit from police. she does not ask for a lawyer. they take her to the station, sit her down and ask her a bunch of questions about what she knew and when she knew it, and what these guys said and did when they got back to the house. she told them she didn't know anything until they got back and then is vague about what was said then. the police were not satisfied with her response and arrest her on 3 counts of accessory to murder because she let them borrow her car to drive to the place where the murder occurred even though everyone agreed she had no idea that's what they'd be doing. she gets a $1.5 million bond. she can't make it. the trial is estimated to take place in 2 years.
example #2- two friends go to a party. friend 1 drives his car and friend 2 is passenger. they split up at the party. friend 1 spends most of his time drinking, smoking pot and hanging out in the front yard. later that night, friend 2 goes to a back room in the house and has an altercation with another guy and ends of robbing and killing him with a knife. friend 2 comes out of the house and tells friend 1 he's ready to go. friend 1 drives friend 2 home.
three days later, the police come calling for friend 1. friend 1 has heard that friend 2 killed the guy but had nothing to do with it and didn't know until after he drove friend 2 home. friend 1 does not get a lawyer. the police want friend 1 to tell them everything about the armed robbery and murder. friend 1 says he doesn't know anything about it other than what he heard after the fact. the police think friend 1 is lying and arrest him for armed robbery and second degree murder. apparently, a couple of days earlier, friend 2 made an offhand remark about killing this other guy that friend 1 may or may not have heard but no one took seriously. plus friend 1 drove friend 2 from the party. friend 1's bond is set at $750,000. friend 1 can't make that bond. that was a year and a half ago. trial is scheduled for early 2013.
but you can tell the police to go fuck themselves if you want. or you can take the lie detector test that the police offered basically forcing them to arrest you if you fail it for any number of reasons. or you can talk to a lawyer and protect yourself.

To administer and read a lie detector is an ART not a SCIENCE. Don't trust a fucking cop for a second. You will gain nothing from this test and you are probably the carp in a fishing expedition. When cops get desperate they often lie.
The cops don't need you and man they expect the same.

you have the right to remain silent and your best option is to do so. From what you said they can't prove you had any involvement.
