Dr Chill, I still grieve over the loss of my dog. Can you help?

I had to put down 2 German Shepherds in the last 3 years because of hip and cancer problems. I feel for you. My youngest daughter still cries about it. Best of luck. And I'm sorry for your loss.

Same thing when I get home from work.  Cat greets me at the door.  As I walk to the bedroom to change, she goes ripping by me and tears into the bedroom....jumps on the bed and gets down in "attack" mode. 
 
Happens every day without fail.  It may be , but it never ever gets old.

waiting for my wife to get home with dinner last night...both pups were on the couch and i made them crazy for the next hour...treats and toys and them going after my socks and ski hats (which never ends and never gets old). this goes on once a day during the week and 3-4 times on weekends...easily. plus long walks, letting them run free on the baseball field near me or at my parents house

i am really sorry for your loss,honest . that is awful to have to go through and probably the hardest thing you will ever have to do .
 
if i had a dog that bit i would just not have him around other people, i would keep him to myself and that would be it so there would be zero chance that would occur.
 
honestly i could care less if if my dog someone, id say whoops sorry  and i'll keep him away from you. that would be it

just looked at your dogs page, how old was he when you put him down? couldnt have been that old. i may have to revise my revised post. i wouldve done things to keep him away from others
 
i could see putting a dog to sleep FOR THE DOGS SAKE if say they had cancer and stopped eating  or if they were terminally ill or something horrible like that but to just put him to sleep because he snapped at someone seems wrong to me

nj, he was probably 4 yrs old or so.
 
If I could keep him away from other people I would but I live with 2 tenants in my house and it's not separate apts.  With the new bite law in Ontario I just couldn't take another chance with him.   After he bit that guy last spring and the dog walker who tested him I got very stressed every time we went to the off leash dog park.  If there were children there we walked away and if people came with their kids I put him on the leash and left.  I hated when people who didn't know him started to play with him because we simply don't know what other triggers he had in him (such as the kicking motion and it didn't even have to be directed at him).
 
It was an absolutely gutwrenching decision but when I saw her hand, I knew I had to do it.   Maybe I could have returned him back to the Humane society but I seriously doubt anyone would ever adopt him knowing his biting problem - ethically I have to disclose his history.  There are dogs there that have been there for months.  Eventually they develop kennel psychosis because they're in a cage 23 hours a day and can't be re-homed so they are put down.  Not saying my dog would remain there but I couldn't take the chance that a new owner wouldn't take his biting problem as seriously as I did.  I would not want a child attack on my conscience.

I'm sorry, but the more I read your posts MDL, the more pissed I become. From what  I gather, the dog got put to sleep because of your living arrangement. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a dog that would bite kids, adults, other dogs, if he doesn't know them. I just don't put him in a situation where he could bite someone. When my nephews come over, he gets put in his dog run and stays there until they leave. Problem solved.
 
I'd have respected you more if you'd have just dropped the dog off on a country road with 50lbs of dog food. At least he would of had a fighting chance. Besides, it's not like you had a Chow or another big dog that could actually do some real damage.

Yeah, you brought this way too much upon yourself.  The dog was stressed out from its environs, not sick or full of dementia.  Pretty much you put down a dog that could have been rehabbed or at least given special circumstance.  You don't have to let every yokel you see rub your dogs belly. 

The dog deserved better (adoption, more training) than killing it.

i can only imagine what u had to go through...  i know it was hard.. but he is now i a better place.  im sure is still guarding u form above.

I'm 3 weeks out from putting my cat down. Still depressed as hell.

Putting them down when it's their time is the ultimate act of loylty, an they know it. Hang in there....it sucks but soon you'll think of your dog and smile thinking of the great life you gave him.

Anger, denial, depression, acceptance, recovery.

you put the dog to sleep because you had him confined in a small place and then you had people over and the dog was scared of them and would snap at them.  your dog was not sick with cancer or didnt have kidney failure or anything else that would have made putting the poor thing to sleep  a human thing to do. you basically killed the dog because your living arrangement sucked and you did it out of convenience. shut the fuck up about it already. you should feel guilty for putting the poor dog to sleep and i hope you feel guilty everyday because you deserve the guilt.

dogs that are stressed or scared will show warning signs.  From what the owner said this dog had a tendancy to snap. maybe you should have done the irresposible thing and giving the dog to the donkey that wanted his nut bit off. But you didnt.
 
sorry you have to be roasted by these people for having to make this decision.

I had a collie I had to get put down 12years ago. At the time I roared like a baby.
 
Since then my mpther died. I have 2 dogs now that i got from a puppy rescue. One is goin blind and deaf and his back legs are going. Pretty soon Im gonna have to take him to the vet.
 
will I be upset? Yeah.
 
Is it the worst thing that can happen - as some have said in this thread? Is it fuck. They are fuckin animals. Lose a close family member guys then get a sense of proportion.

very sorry, i have a pup and she spends all day with her daddy. i don't know what i'll do without her, and she's only a year.

when a dog that loves you and you love them ends up very sick and dying it is very very sad.
 
if thats the way you feel about them that "they are fucking animals" then maybe you dont deserve to have an animal  because you dont seem to care that much for them.

There are people on this thread sayin a pet dyin is the worst thing that can happen to you. If you truly think that i pity you.

I have owned dogs for 30+ years also cats and horses.

When u get a pet u have to suspect it will die before you do. Part of the price u pay for havin em is knowin u will have the sadness when they die.

 

But worst thing in the world?

 

Get a fuckin life.
