It's a damn OUTRAGE that King get's his OWN day and George Washington has to share a freakin' day with Lincoln.
... This is INSANE!
Let's forget about Linclon for a second, and examine George Washington's accomplishments vs. King's
It's ironic that Lincoln who "freed the slaves" doesn't get to have his own national holiday, but a descendant of the slaves he helped free does.
A. WASHINGTON
George Washington was the commander of the Colonial Army, who despite a lack of trained soldiers, not enough food, munitions or money for payroll beat the greatest army in the world, not once, but twice (Revolutionary War and War of 1812). Washington was an integral leader in the first continental congress (the American Articles of Confederation) and the second continental congress (The Constitution of the United States of America), so he also founded two nations. He was the first President of the United States, and he set the precedent (unbroken until FDR) that a POTUS is not a monarch and should not hold office for more than two (2) terms. Washington put down 2 rebellions within the new States without dissolving the fragile new union, and he donated enough books to seed the Library of Congress.
B. M.L. KING, J.R.
A baptist minister who organized protests and marches to bring attention to the fact that the laws of the United States were not being enforced. Raised in a country with an education system that allowed men/women to become educated to the doctoral level. Had Free Speech about political discord which was secured by those berfore him (he did not secure any rights personally). Had a "dream" and was a marvelous communicator. Never elected to any political office of consequence where he could personally effect any change. Personal accomplishments: Education, marraige, children, repeated arrests, sprayed with fire hoses, bitten by dogs. Actual legislation passed with his signature on it: zero.
So, Washington founded the country (twice) won 2 wars, started the greatest library in modern history, and set the American ideal that the POTUS is a citizen accountable to the nation, not a monarch. King was a motivating speaker with a message and an adoring mass media.

Personally, I vote for actual accomplishments. As to why King has two days and Washington/Lincoln have to share one, that becomes the lovely policy of political correctness run-a-muck and less about the actual signifigance of the individual to the nation.
