I thought this was a funny experiment
What a moron. It's not even close to the same. People have pretty much complete control over their grade based on how hard they study, etc. Not everyone has complete control over whether they can find a job.
Not to mention, if someone were to give you some GPA points, it would basically make your degree fraudulent.
You want a Dr. who graduated because of the benefit of someone else's GPA points?
If I were to run into this
, I would punch him in the face.

I think this is great. All the same (broke) people who support higher taxes on the wealthy all of a sudden change their tune when something is being taken from them.
Also, to Hutch, this kid isnt actually proposing this as a real idea. He's just doing it to draw a comparison between how the wealthy are forced to give their hard earned money to people who (mostly) arent hard working individuals.
This kid is showing first hand the "me first, where's my handout?" attitude of today's american. They are in favor of it when it is being handed to them, but strongly against it when something is being taken from them.
Obviously money and a GPA are not the same thing, but comparable that it is something you work hard and for years for that the govt just wants to take from you + give to someone else who may OR MAY NOT have even made an effort

Do you really need some stupid kid to make a GPA analogy to understand what re-distribution of wealth is all about and that some people take advantage of the system?

Well I dont, and obviousy you dont as well, but a lot of people do and its refreshing to see a young person talking about how the system is being abused, instead of figuring out ways to further take advantage of it

You gotta be kidding me
You gotta be kidding me
You gotta be kidding me
I have voted for every tax increase that goes toward education since I've been able to vote. And I don't have any kids. My business partner has kids and he has voted against every tax increase related to education since he's been able to vote.
It's called looking at the big picture IMO.

Wow, so many things wrong with this, I don't know where to start. But I'll give it a shot.
What a moron - Why do you say this? Personally, I think this is quite an interesting study. Does that make me a moron as well?
People have pretty much complete control over their grade based on how hard they study, etc. - I disagree with this statement entirely. Some people just are not good test takers. Some people, no matter how hard they study, can't get good grades. Call it a specific type of intelligence that allows you to memorize and regurgitate, call it whatever you want, but I have met some bright, successful individuals that could not get good grades and some complete morons with the common sense of a 6 year old that graduated Summa juice Laude.
Not everyone has complete control over whether they can find a job. - I disagree with this statement as well. "Not everyone has complete control over whether they can find a job they want to do or think they deserve to be doing" is the statement I think you meant to make. There are plenty of places hiring if you are willing to work. May not be the most glamorous of jobs, but they are out there.
You want a Dr. who graduated because of the benefit of someone else's GPA points? - Looks like someone else already addressed this above. Two words, affirmative action
.
If I were to run into this
, I would punch him in the face. - So because someone ran an interesting social experiment, that makes him
. Aren't you in HR? You should know better than making that sort of statement. And judging from what I know about HR guys, I'm assuming once you had punched him in the face, he probably would have kicked the $hit out of you
.
I don't mean to pick a fight, and nothing personal because I have seen a lot of your posts and you seem like a good guy, I just disagree with pretty much everything you wrote about this.![]()

An interesting study? What is interesting about it? It's not even a decent analogy.
And I said people "pretty much" have control over their grades.
I'm in the employment industry. You say there are "jobs out there" if you are willing to work. I talk to numerous people every day who are pretty much willing to do anything. Companies don't hire them because they know they will be off to a new job the minute something better comes along.
You know who the people are who are out of work? The 15-30 years of experience folks who maybe were getting paid pretty well.....and the entry level people with very little experience. If you think companies are standing in line to hire these folks, you're sadly mistaken.
And yeah, I've been in HR my entire career. If you think that means you have to be nice to every person you ever run into, you're mistaken about that as well.
This whole premise that this kid came up with is no different than me telling my next door neighbor to donate me some of his land. Do you really need this kid to come up with this example so you can get in touch with what re-distribution of wealth means?

Even if the person graduated at the top of their class and was recognized as the best in their field?
I'd be surprised if you really even knew what Affirmative Action is and what it's not.

Probably not. I also have dated a teacher and I know what they make....and it's not enough for what they do. I also know how limited their resources are.
I was able to go to a darn good college because of the generosity of others.....people who graduated from there who donate to the school so others can have the same experience (when they might not have been able to afford it otherwise). I received a stipend each of the two years I was in graduate school at the U of M.
I am grateful I was able to have both of those opportunities...not possible if others weren't willing to give.
Yeah, the system is FAR from perfect. But I'm in a position where I can afford to give a little and I'm not going to piss and moan about it.

And for those who get all hot and bothered by the "re-distribution of wealth"..........watch the documentary "Why We Fight" and get back to me. ![]()
The government re-distributes the wealth ALL THE TIME and it doesn't matter whether the republicans or dems are in control. I just wonder why the righties are all bitter when the dems do it, but don't seem to have any problem at all when the righties do.
