the respect they deserve.  but what good does it do them to respect them on one hand and not criticize the government when they send them to bullshit unwinnable wars just to serve their own corrupt interests. again, what the fuck are we still doing in iraq and afghanistan?   these kids' lives are worth more than that.  giving them lip service doesn't make up the difference.

Are you saying this all political? What are we still doing there?? It's because they are still OUT THERE? And again, what does that have to do with considering the fallen (vets) heroes??? Do you not believe they are heroes too?

Long ago I learned that politics is the contest of "Who gets what, when and how". Thus, in every relationship we conduct we are negotiating who gets what, when, and how. If we apply this to our relationship with the Taliban, Muslim, Islamist et. al., I think we can safely say we are fighting for the right to live our lives without having to convert to Islam or die. Some would say we don't need to face this choice if we stay in our home country, the U.S.A. These are the same people who would deny the Islamization in virtually every country on this planet. How many more countries have to be Islamized before you and your ilk realize some day the knife will eventually be held to you and your family's throats? Or do you plan on converting before that point is reached?

yes. i'm saying our current wars are political.  and i'm saying that our politicians spew a bunch of propoganda bullshit that make a lot of people believe spending billions of dollars and a lot of young people's lives is worth it somehow, people who need a history lesson about our continuous meddling in other countries which does nothing but cause more problems and ensure endless conflicts.  but i guess we need to spend more 20 uear old children currency to make sure we aren't all bowing down to mecca tomorrow.

UPDATE: Chris Hayes issued a statement on Monday apologizing for his comments:

On Sunday, in discussing the uses of the word "hero" to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don't think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I've set for myself. I am deeply sorry for that.

As many have rightly pointed out, it's very easy for me, a TV host, to opine about the people who fight our wars, having never dodged a bullet or guarded a post or walked a mile in their boots. Of course, that is true of the overwhelming majority of our nation's citizens as a whole. One of the points made during Sunday's show was just how removed most Americans are from the wars we fight, how small a percentage of our population is asked to shoulder the entire burden and how easy it becomes to never read the names of those who are wounded and fight and die, to not ask questions about the direction of our strategy in Afghanistan, and to assuage our own collective guilt about this disconnect with a pro-forma ritual that we observe briefly before returning to our barbecues.

But in seeking to discuss the civilian-military divide and the social distance between those who fight and those who don't, I ended up reinforcing it, conforming to a stereotype of a removed pundit whose views are not anchored in the very real and very wrenching experience of this long decade of war. And for that I am truly sorry.

ok, so tell me, as kids continue to die in iraq and afghanistan.  or better yet, pretend you are talking to a parent whose kid is contemplating signing up.  what's the end game in these countries?  when will they end?  what will we accomplish when they end?  what will happen in those places going forward?  in iother words, why are those kids dying?  i don't want to hear the bush/obama protecting our freedom platitudes or a santorum-type answer that those crazy muslims are trying to take over the world.  i'm sure the parents would want to hear specifics before their kids risk their lives.

Take particular heed of his words "...any man who would come into my country" There is no man on earth who hasn't the right to kill foreigners who come into his country to kill.

I'm of course sorry for the loss of your soldiers and their injuries. But hero is a very exclusive adjective that we apply to the very bravest and best of the human race. You don't become a hero simply by putting on a uniform and getting killed trying to kill somebody else.

Take away the lesson of what this man, a genuine hero, is saying. Go into somebody's else's country and starting acting the maggot, and you can be sure that somebody is going to kill your ass.

So Paddy by that logic American soldiers were "maggots" for going over into Germany and Europe to fight the Germans in WWII?  Is that what you think?  If there is an incredible injustice being done, so long as it is not on your soil, you should just let it be?

You are correct about that.(Marines can still use their post 9/11 benefits or Montgomery GI bill bennies)..benefits for EVERYONE have been slowly eroded under the current administration. 

No cost of living adjustment for 3 years for social security recipients or anyone on disability. This administration is hell bent on QUADRUPLING Tricare benefits for ALL retirees.  This was a benefit that was supposed to be FREE, and now they want to stick it to the retirees..all under THIS ADMINISTRATION who got elected because they care so much for the people...lmao!!

Thankfully, there was a small COLA increase this year.......just so happens to be election year.

No, I don't think that. Germany had ceased to be a country by the time the war started, and had attacked many other countries in Europe, so of course other countries were justified in working together to suppress the evil of Nazism. 

"Acting the maggot" is an Irish expression which is a soft way of what I was trying to say. I was also using the general hard logic in the words of Dan Breen, who was talking about the English coming into Ireland and why he killed them. Lots of them.

My presence in this thread has less to do with the rightness or wrongness of American involvement in foreign wars than with the awful kiiyiing from these couchbound patriots about who was a hero.

I have no doubt there have been tens of thousands of heroic acts by those in the American armed forces in their history. Putting on a uniform is not necessarily one of them. Those who say it is, effectively putting the real heroes into a blender with those who merely sacrificed, depreciates the value of the real heroes by lowering the standard of what it takes to be called a hero.

Think about this:  It's 1942 and you enlist because you're up for "a big adventure"....and all your friends were doing the same.  You train....you get shipped over to England.....and you are the first one out of the boat at Omaha beach.  You take one step and get cut down by an MG-42.

Are you a hero?  Not in my book.  You're incredibly brave having given your life, but a hero is different.
