And besides the solid front seven, the Cocks have Garcia throwing to a veteran receiving group, and backed by a solid running game.

A little worried about the investigation crap but I think the opening kickoff is just what all these players need to vent their frustrations.  Just wish someone would penalize these scumbucket agents.  We will likely have to wait until the day before to find out if there will be players sitting. Even if a couple are I will still play it for average coin because I won't be able 2 stay away opening night!!! 

  well said   spreadsifter ....i was thinking along the same lines...one thing i would like to add is when the old ball coach smells blood he goes for the juggalar ...just think back to his florida gators squads when they had a lead....he could be up 27-10 in the 4th period and the final  SCORE   ended up 54 to 10...i know them teams were much better then,, but steve wants to get the bowl game loss  to uconn 20 to 7 out of his teams,, system... so look for a inspired efforted in the  season opeoner ....i thank the gamecocks pull away late........ S. Miss is a team that almost always plays well in out of conference games against the bigger boys.  But the numbers that caught my eye were the 15th ranked national defense last year while playing in the SEC against the a team that had the 80th ranked defense in the county last year.  Yeah, S. Miss has a pretty solid offense, ranked in the top third of the country. But what can it do against a D like that on the road in an opener where offense is usually the thing that is most rusty???  This game kind of freeks me out because on top of it all.......S. Car never kills anyone!!!  I'll stay away for now. 

Here is my take on this game....

SC played great D last year and have most of the players back and the same coordinator back as well.  They are particulary good vs the pass.  Their run game was lacking last year but help could be on the way with freshman stud Lattimore and a new oline coach/ run game coordinatior.  Also Spurrier will be calling his own plays this year.  He has a good but sometimes stupid QB in Garcia who is a wildcard for this offense.   

S. Miss big weekness will be its O line that that has to break in 4 new starters.  QB play is solid and one of the best WR in the country in Brown who should be totally over his broken leg by now.  The D will be good again with solid DL play and good linebackers.  They were 43rd vs the run last year, but 109 vs the pass so they can be beat in the air.  Not to mention their cb's are small and SC's are very large men.  

My take is that SC will be able to run the ball just enough to set up some playaction and have 2 big plays through the air vs the S.miss undersized CB's.  There should be more but Garcia and the offense on the whole will fail to execute in this the 1st game.(mental mistakes)  S. Miss D will be pretty good and will hold SC for most of the game.   For S. Miss Brown will make at least 1 big play but SC's deffense will be pretty good vs the pass and will frustrate S. Miss offense with a good pass rush vs new faces on the OL. 

Final :  SC- 21  S. Miss- 17   

 

Die hard Carolina fan here and I am very informed on our team.

Here is my take FWIW.....SC should win this game but the number seems right on (-14). Our OLine should be alittle improved but could be a little thin for the game due to some nagging injuries. SMU's weakness will be thier OLine....I feel our Dline will dominate them here...and this will be the key to the game.

One thing to consider is that SC has UGA the next week....so if we ride our D early and get a lead.....Spurrier will most likely go vanilla.

Not sure if I will play it or not.

Like the Under better than the points. Two good Defenses,SM  very inexperienced Off line,erratic Garcia,  UGA on deck,etc... feel my edge is here.. GLTA...

If I go I'll take USC and give the 14 points

Southern Miss will be in the run for one of the best defenses in CUSA which is not saying a whole lot but they do have experience. Their LB's will be the strength along with the DLine. Their DB's will NOT be near as bad as last year simply due to experience and an entire off season. To stay within 14 against USC it will mostly rely on USM's defense which they will do. I am not worried about their offense because they have the playmakers at every position, sure the O line may give up a few sacks but with a good coach and the play makers USM has on offense you can adjust and adjust by play calling. I know Fedora is a great coach and will have his team ready to play, so for the ones who think USC runs away with this because of their weak O line is mistaken, of course that is my opinion. Coach Fedora knows his strengths and weaknesses and the play calling will reflect this. Expect a lot of misdirection, screens (which kills a pass rush and potentially can slow it down the rest of the game) so I think this game stays close. I like USM +14 and under 47.5 but not sure if I will play the total yet. Actually USM +14 is probably the best looking line out in week one. USM has the defense and play makers on offense (2 stud RB's) which includes one of the best WR's in the country. I think some of you are underestimating USM in week one a little too much with some of the blow out predictions I've read in this thread.

Southern Miss +14.5 is a pretty safe bet especially to start the year off...they will have there homework done on south carolina and hell they get over 2 touchdowns before the game starts!!

Take SMU +14.5

Good call.  The OL weakness for both teams is the key, especially against solid defensive fronts.  A few drives will bog down due to this and I also see SC winning an ugly game, but not covering the 2 TD spread.  Spurrier may have to show some of his cards to georgia just to pull this one out. 

21-17 is a pretty reasonable prediction, but opening games are rfeally hard to pick due to so many mistakes.

 

Look for USC to struggle early on offense. Southern Miss first half might be worth a look. 

S. Miss +14...  This game will be close and a dog fight til the final play. The most points SC put up last year was 38 pts vs SCSU in week 2. It will be all defense on thursday night boys. Take S. Miss and the under!!!!

NCAA punsihment (if any) to come out today for the players who may or may npot have received improper benfits at local hotel in Columbia.

Don't expect much but something to keep an eye on.

TE W. Saunders is officially out for So Miss game due to being a moron....seriously though his suspension will at least be for this game

So Miss is returning most of their studs at defense-- they were pretty legit last year too... unless Garcia has all of a sudden made great strides I don't see how USC stretches the lead by more than 2 TDs

Spurrier now says he will be going with a 2 quarterback rotation.  There goes his confidence in Garcia!  Another year in Columbia where the ol' ball coach has the "the best talent he has ever had" and the exectations are high.  S. Miss may keep this close after Garcia throws an int or two.  Staying away from this one but thinking under is the play.

With all do respsect, So Miss ranked around 80th in total defense last year and around 105 in total pass defense. Same 5'11" DB's going up against 6'5" Carolina WR's.

 

I think USC should cover but 14 seems right on....still on under only.
