SJSU seems to step up at home in conference games that they should have no chance at winning.  Last year they beat Fresno and only lost to Boise St by 3 at home.  In fact, that loss to Boise was their only home loss of the year.  The last time they played Haw at home they only lost by 7.

Yeah, I know...  different season, different teams...  Conference football is different though.  Home field can be everything and apparantly it IS every thing with SJSU.  They've won 3 in a row (I know, bad teams) and 2 in a row at home.

I know Hawaii is the better team but OU was better than Col and USC was better than Stanford.  Colt IS hurting a little and they MAY pull his  ass in the third and the spread is RIPE for a backdoor cover.

Those are my reasons.  I hope they make sense

As much as I love to take Hawaii at the half I took a look at the numbers, stats, trends, injuries, and others. In this situation the home dog has covered the 1st half line ats 75-23.

I know that's not the answer that the 1st half UH backers want to hear. Remember trends are a 2 sided stat it depends on what side you are on. In this case the SJSU 1st half backers would have a better chance of covering. Colt not at a 100% makes me take a step back on the first half line. Maybe if this game was played in Hawaii my answer would be different as SJSU is not a very good traveling team.

If I were to touch this one it would be for SJSU at the half. I never go against UH so more than likely a no play for me. It's not just because I'm a fan it's that the June Jones offensive scheme is set up to make big plays at any given time and I don't want to take that chance.

Still need to find out the status closer to gameday for Brennan before I touch this one if I even touch this at all.

Awesome comments on the pros and cons of playing Hawaii in this game. personally, I'm leaning toward staying away from this one and just watching the game. That being said a "gut feeling" might hit me as time draws closer:) Was at school all day and moral is high as is the desire to put a whooping on SJSU especially due to the fact that the BCS projection poll has Hawaii barely in the top 25 (#20) as the strength of schedule factor has really hurt the Warriors this time around.

I appreciate the insight guys.  A homer always has to consider more than just a gut feeling.

Here's my take:

1.  San Jose is like Vegas in that there are a lot of local's living in the area.  There should be a good showing for the away team.  It's only 6 hr travel time and 1 time zone away.

2.  While Tomey is a good defensive coach, he hasn't put up much defens against anyone on this years schedule.  If Stanford can put up 500yds on 'em, imagine what Hawaii will do.

3.  Colt will not sit this game out.  He won't be benched for the same reason he wasn't benched for UNLV with the same injury.  Colt was benched for Utah St., because the game was already won in the 2nd qtr.

4.  Hawaii's defense is a lot better than it's 27th ranking.  An easy schedule meant a lot of 3rd & 4th stringers see play time in junk time.

I have never bet Hawaii at the half.  I always shoot for the whole game.

Do we have a total yet?

Anyone have any thoughts on how a nationally televised game   will affect Brennan  since he is seeking the Heisman award.

Saying that,  would they still take him out in the second half if they are ahead and covering the spread?

If Utah State can cover against Hawaii at home and score 37 points, imagine what San Jose can do 3000 miles away and at home being a better team than Utah State... Taking San Jose State 1st half and for the game. It's too easy to take Hawaii in this game. It will be the only show on television. That shit alone is going to make San Jose play harder. I see San Jose losing by a touchdown at the most in this game.

Guys:  It's only 20 points.

Hawaii had a 31 point spread @ Idaho at the half.  The game was over at the half.  Keep in mind, SJSU could only manage 28pts all game long against the Vandals.

SJSU's highest scoring game was UC Davis.  34points.  What was the spread on that one?

Cocknocker has a point.  This is the biggest game of the year for SJSU.

You point out the Aggie/Warrior game.  At the half, Utah St. had 2 field goals and one 100yd k/o return (13pts).  Hawaii matched that with 31 points.  The game was over at the half.  SJSU, on the other hand, barely won with a field goal over the Aggies.

Prime time.  ESPN's best coverage crew.  The first chance for the East Coast to see a (16) Hawaii game this year?  There is no way Hawaii will throw in the 4th string at the start of the 2nd half.  Look for 5 passing td's and 3 rushing td's from Hawaii.

watched the local news last night. Colt Brennan looked good in practice. According to the coaches Colt is a lot more moblie since the injury and should not have any problems in this Friday's game.

This may sound confusing to some but this is what i do sometimes if i am stuck on a bet. I know it isnt very good, but it just helps me a little. So, Hawaii scores 53.8 ppg, and allows 21.8 ppg. SJSU scores 17 ppg, and allows 28.3. So i add the total of the Hawaii Offence plus SJSU Defence, and divide by two (so take the mean), and then take SJSU offence and add that to the total of Hawaii defence. So....

Hawaii O + SJSU D= 53.8 + 21.8 = 82.1 / 2 = 41.05
SJSU O + Hawaii D= 17 + 21.8 = 38.8 / 2 = 19.4

So i then expect Hawaii to win 41-19 and then subtract the two numbers and if the number is higher than the spread, i take the favorite, if it is lower i take the points. Sorry if I rambled on here. So 41-19 = 22 which is higher than the spread so then thats one more thing going for Hawaii. Sorry, just felt like saying this. You may criticize this as much as you want

My final thoughts on SJSU's wins:

Utah St. (23-20):  Spartan's score the go-ahead TD w/53 sec. left.

Idaho St. (28-20):  Need a couple of late ints to preserve win.

UC Davis (34-14):  Davis scores first.  4ints won the game for Spartans.  Spartans: 1/10 on 3rd downs.  1/2 on 4th downs.

Davis did about as well/bad in its loss to conference rival North Dakota State.

This may be the easiest opponent Hawaii faces this year.

Take the under.  70points is fine if you think SJSU will score.  I don't.

San Jose State will be the easiest opponent that Hawaii will face this year ? I don't think so !!!  You are so sure that Hawaii will ROUT the Spartans !! I don't think so !!  So far you are 0 for 2 !!
Hawaii GAVE UP 37 points to a HAPLESS Utah State team , that is probably in the bottom 5 in college football . Hawaii SHOULD'VE lost the game at LA. Tech !! They REAL LUCKY & they gave up 44 points to a BAD LA. Tech team . I guess that you are like a kid in a candy store , that Hawaii allowed 37 & 44 points in 2 of their wins this year !!!
San Jose State WILL UPSET Hawaii & Colt Brennan on Friday !!
It's suppose to be VERY WET ( RAIN !!) in San Jose on Thurs & Fri.. This game will favor San Jose State a LOT MORE than Hawaii  due to the field conditions being WET , muddy, & sloppy & that will
put a DAMPER on Hawaii's high powered offense !!
I'll GLADLY take San Jose state + 19 in this game !!
In the past history , SJS has played real good teams VERY TOUGH at home . Remember in 2001 ( at home on a wet , muddy,  sloppy field ) the BEAT 8TH ranked TCU & LaDanian Tomlinson !!! WATCH OUT HAWAII !!!
Final score : San Jose State 28  Hawaii 27 !!!

Oooops.  Did I touch a nerve?

Props to SJSU last year for:  PLaying us tough the first half.  Winning the New Mexico Bowl.  Playing Boise St. tough.

Why did you change from a running team last year...to a mostly passing team this year?

You are faulting Hawaii for allowing Utah St. to score 37pts.  How is it that your team could only score 2 TD's against them...one in the 1rst quarter....and one in the final 53 seconds of the game? Does Utah St. have a tough defense?  I didn't get that impression when we played 'em.  We scored 50+ points.  All three of our quarterbacks saw at least a full quarter of play.  How much of the game did Adam Tafralis play?

Send my regards to Dick Tomey.  He was our Head Coach before Ronald Reagan was elected.  He was also our play by play announcer a couple of years ago.  He gave June Jones his first coaching job at Hawaii.

Thanks for reminding me about rain.  It should reinforce the under call.  <70pts,

Enjoy the game guys.  It sounds like we have a rivalry, but Hawaii has won 7/8 last time we played SJSU.  Mutual respect by coaches.

No , you didn't touch a nerve !!!  About the running game , our TOP 2 RB's are more than likely out for the year !! So we have to throw the football . I , myself , have ALWAYS liked more of a passing attack , than a running attack.
You are forgetting 2 things my friend . 1. WE ( SJS) ONLY allowed Utah State 20 points !! That tells you that our defense is pretty good!!
2. I know that we only scored 23 points , BUT anyway you look at it , it was a victory for the MIGHTY SPARTANS , that came in dramatic fashion . That made the win even sweeter !!
Yes , I'm FAULTING Hawaii in letting a VERY POOR team ( Utah State) scoring 37 points !!  Earlier in the year , Utah State lost to Oklahoma 54 -3 . Oklahoma's defense played great for the whole game, with NO LET DOWN what so ever !! That's how it should be !!

Hey Bigdaddy,I got killed with the last Hawaii game, good thing I also took the over and lost a little on that game.. I am definitely taking the Over in this one also .. How do you feel about Hawaii at the half in this one? If Colton can't play how do you feel about their chance of covering here? From what i see in the second half of last game the second string QB seems to play better completing his first 9 passes.. 3 for Td's.. Well your input will be appreciated..

i was at the game and he took a direct hit on his ankle and its one of those lingering injuries that hell play with for the rest of the regular season. i go out to the practices regulaurly and see colts competitiveness first hand so i know he will gut it out on national tv and his boys will have his back. colt wouldnt have played the first series of the second half against utah state if he was severely hurt. as for the defense they couldnt get utah state off the field on third downs and thats what hurt the overall performance not to mention the kickoff return and the 80 yard bomb utah state hit to  open a drive for a td.they were going on 4th downs and the qb was rolling out almost every play and tucking and running at the first sight of a defender. utah state did everything possible to try and hang with hawaii so dont think hawaii had a bad game last week because that wasnt the case. it was raining off and on all game and hawaii didnt take them serious from the start and im sure that was a wake up call for them because they know the last time they let a team take a 2 score lead to start it almost cost them @ la tech.

hawaii @ the game is the play in my opinion .

i cant pull the trigger on the half just due to the fact that they seem to do their damage in the 2nd and 3rd quarters leaving me to guess how theyll start right out of the gates and when im guessing i aint laying money.

good luck to everyone and i hope this helps answer some questions.

I posted earlier that the numbers on my system makes this out to have SJSU to cover the 1st half. I hate to go against UH not only on a fan base point of view only because their offense is set up to explode at any time.

It's very hard to bet against June Jones and his offensive system. This very system made a lot of UH players on offense look very good.

I have always been the type of person that if the numbers go against UH I don't invest in the play. Their offense is very explosive but our defense is unpredictable.

As far as the second string QB Graunke he is just as good in this system but from the last I heard Colt will play and looking like his old self again.

I'm not sure if some of the UH fans in here remember when Timmy Chang got red shirted and Nick Rolovich stepped in at QB. It did not take long for the Warrior fans to fall in love with him.

Good luck if you play this one bro I might change my mind by Friday after a few Heineken's and play the Warriors.

MauiWORRIER , I'm glad to see that Brennan will be fine for the game. I want the SPARTANS to beat Hawaii , when Hawaii is at full strength !!! I'm sure that MY SPARTANS will do their best to RACK UP Brennan . If we do rack up Brennan , I guess that UH
will have to bring in Tyler . We'll just have to RACK him too !!
I was watching that nice you tube clip that you posted , & it seems to me , that Coach Jones & a few other Hawaii players that were interview , seem VERY NERVOUS about playing the MIGHTY SPARTANS !!  I'm STILL sticking with MY SPARTANS & the score,
28-27 San Jose State !!
