Temple Record: 3-0 (Owls spread v. Nova; Owls Under vs. CMU and UConn)
Well it's time for Temple's first road game of the season and it's an intriguing one. A trip to Happy Valley to take on the overrated Nittany Lions. The Spread and total is out in this one and I'm working on where I want to go with this.
First glance, I'm very leery about this one. There's a lot of issues with the Owls this season. Their secondary is still piss poor, Chester Stewart is ridiculously inconsistent and the offensive line can't block anyone. Yet, this team keeps winning games they wouldn't have in the past.
The most important key for this game is to leave healthy. Two years ago, they lost Adam DiMichele for the season and that turned things around. Bernard Pierce's health is of the utmost importance because he is a gamechanger. It's very odd how they can block with 8 in the box keying the run but they can't block a blitz coming after the QB.
I'll let you guys begin the discussion with your thoughts and I'll be back later with my official pick. It may surprise you.

Blake - you are one of the best so I look forward to it. And to hoops :)
I am on the under. Unless it is an elite offense, Penn St can play D, and they don't move the ball well with the true frosh QB. Also, Joe calls off the dogs most times. Until I see a good reason to not bet PSU under, I will continue to cash that ticket more times than not (Under is 10-4 in PENST last 14 games on grass.)

i think this game will stay under. PSU notoriously shuts it down early on and never runs the score up, and i really, really think TEMPLE can KEEP THIS THING CLOSE. Penn st is vastly overrated, and really struggled with Kent St. Temple is head and shoulders above Kent. i think temple stays within the 15 here.

Vegas wants you to take temple. Just like ecu getting 20!!?!?!! Dont get fooled....34-13 PSU
ECU gave up 28 straight points in the 2nd half with 2 picks 1 for a TD
do u honestly believe that Vegas knew this would happen? its called a moose or a backdoor cover....in this case it was by the favorite not the dog as the trend usually is.....

Bolden making too many mistakes.....Royster can't get going (hasn't rushed for over 40 yards YET in any game)..... with Iowa on deck ......Nittany Lions CAN'T be too interested here can they ?.... OWLS.....on the other hand......will be.....they now have the talent / SIZE....to keep this one close * Golden puts a little extra into this one.....returning to his alma mater.....in an early job audition.....don't be (too) shocked if the Owls win
It is better to be feared - than to be loved.

love Temple here......hit it early at 17

This is a standard PSU season and now is when Jo Pa does his thing and gets them focused to make a 6 or 7 game run. PSU is clearly the better program although Temple is MUCH improved I don't see matching up with PSU' s play makers on both sides of the ball for the full game. PSU with 2 late scores and wins here by 24

Alright, I've taken a look at everything and here's my thoughts....Before I get into it, I'm not in love with anything here but I can't cop out and say I like nothing:
This is one of the best Temple teams to enter Happy Valley in a long team. Despite that, there's a lot of things wrong for a game of this stature. You can get away with some faults in MAC games and games against the academies but you can't get away with them against the Big 10 (alright, maybe against Indiana)...The O-Line is bad...really bad...Penn State has managed only five sacks this season and only one against a piss poor YSU team. The question is whether or not they can get pressure on Chester Stewart enough to harass them.
I really feel like the Owls are going to go real conservative on the offensive plan which is not what I'd do in order to win a tough road game like this. Temple's gotta punch them in the mouth early...come out and show success thru the air to setup the run. When PSU puts 8 in the box, it's a lot different then the 8 or 9 in the box that CMU/Toledo/BG will put in. PSU's allowing over 100 yards rushing a game this season.
Offensively, it's nice to see the Owls finding multiple options at WR/TE. Streeter, Campbell, Nixon and E.Rodriguez are all stepping up and making some noise. Penn State is giving up under 200 yards passing a game. I just don't think that Temple has enough to threaten Penn State here. The Nittany Lions are vulnerable but I think Temple's conservative nature will hurt them in the end.
Defensively vs. Penn State's offense Temple has the edge. Adrian Robinson and Muhammed Wilkerson are studs on the D-Line. The Nits havent allowed a sack yet on offense and ironically are anti-Temple in that they can pass block but not run block. Stephon Green and Evan Royster figure to want to go off against a team that got gashed by Todman of UConn. What's ironic is that this could be the game that Penn State gets their passing offense off because as mentioned multiple times in my threads, Temple's secondary gives a cushion and sometimes doesn't make the tackle.
Let me tie this all up for you. I'm optimistic this Temple team is better then most of their teams the last few years. The talent is there to make a nice run.......AFTER this game. I just envision the Nits grinding the Owls in the ground after a couple of 3 and outs. I love all of you who think they are going to win this but my concern is the team's health. While I hate Penn State with a passion and would love a win, I just don't see it.
Penn State 31-10
Those are my thoughts. I don't love the total as much as I think Penn State covers the two touchdowns. I think those who jumped on Temple early will be sweating a frustrating game out big time. Penn State at -14 is a gift.

the problem with this is it is a entirely different game with vastly different teams. didnt play ecu as vtech was bound to come to life and ecu defense is atrocious(didnt play vt either but saw the signs), both these teams are grinders and not explosive at all ...not to mention with everyone on ecu the line kept going up, in this game the action is pretty split while the line is moving in temples favor, so not entirely sure how or where you see the similarities in the two games.

yo blake, just wanted to stop buy and give a bit of thanks for your Temple analysis last week. i bought out of my UCONN -6.5 last week based primarily on your thoughts about that game. eating a hondo in juice was much better than the alternative....
gracias!
