While it might make for good new material for ESPN and others to drive into the ground, asking a school such as MIss St for money is not an NCAA violation, so unless Auburn or rep gave the family money there's no news here other than ESPN hype. Phone conversations asking for money or other school recruiters (with a vested interest in seeing another school accused and face potential problems) making claims they lost out due to money are not a violation, only the actual transfer of money.The NCAA requested financial statements from the father and church a month ago to see any money was involved, should be easy enough to do and the only thing that matters. Meanwhile Cecil drives around in his old caddy and Newton rides around on a motor scooter, so maybe the church got rich or maybe not. OU Stoops recruited Newton out of JC and his people said they encountered nothing unusual, again meaningless however some indication they got left out of the supposed bidding war.
The problem is that, much like steroids, it's happened enough that many people's mindset is to assume the worst and presume guilt until cleared (even though some good players named passed tests years ago, some did not). Even if he is cleared, there will still be some who will claim that it was all true and the investigation was rigged.

Gene Chizik was adamant yesterday that Cam will play Saturday. Clearly, Auburn is showing faith in the investigation it has done to this point regarding Cam's recruitment, and is finding comfort in the advice it is getting from the SEC and NCAA.
But as an Auburn fan I'm sweating, at least a little, in wake of ESPN's report that some MSU coaches directly heard demands or references from Cam and his father about money-for-signature scheme. Because what if everyone's investigations have missed something? After all, the compliance and enforcement staff's don't have subpoena power and can't compel truthfulness.
If it's ever proved that the Newtons got money--or even merely asked for it--Auburn presumably could claim mitigating circumstances in its decision to play Cam this season. But the case would still remain a problem for the university, perhaps in terms of Cam's eligibility or perhaps in terms of an institutional penalty someday.
And that poses this enormous headache for any compliance department: There are so many representative of the school's athletics interests out there that it's impossible to know and control what all of them do. What if there's an outlaw booster with intermediaries out there that no one knows about?
If that's so, then the compliance department would probably welcome a knowledgeable whistleblower. How about setting up a tip hotline that rewards credible information with two tickets to the BCS title game?

Does ANYONE really think that Cecil and Cam Newton did NOTHING WRONG?? I mean just get serious. Reggie Bush was doing it out in the WIDE OPEN. Not even trying to cover his tracks and the NCAA who doesnt mind taking away some scholarships hates to get into HUGE investigations because it hurts their sport, but they learned from Bush that you may as well because every coach and every fan in the SEC and everywhere else will be crying for it. It took a long time for them to hand judgement down on Reggie Bush. He was already 2 years into the league, but the exact same thing will happen to Newton and if he wins anything or a NC they will get stripped just like Bush. So be happy now but it wont lost long RECENT HISTORY has shown us that.
Also as far as Reggie Bush being so good. The team he played for was loaded with number 1 draft picks and a TON of them looked like superstars and 75% of them or now either are busts or not in the NFL at all because they thought they were such hot crap. And anyone that wants to defend Bush after he wrecked an entire college football program is sad and Bush had little to do with the SB victory check the stats. Also football is a team sport. Four voters said allegations alone could be enough to dissuade them from putting Newton on their ballots.
"I have very serious concerns about what I'm hearing," Bill Cole of the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal said. "At this point, I can't envision voting for him. One Reggie Bush tainting the Heisman is enough."
Bush won the Heisman in 2005. The NCAA later determined he and his family received improper benefits and ruled the Southern California star tailback was ineligible for the '05 season.
The Heisman ballot states: "The recipients must be in compliance with the bylaws defining an NCAA student athlete."
As the Heisman Trust considered whether to take away Bush's Heisman, he gave it back in September, and the '05 award was left vacant.
The NCAA is reviewing Newton's recruitment, but Auburn has not received a letter of inquiry, a person told the AP last week on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to comment publicly.
Newton started his college career at Florida and was Tim Tebow's backup as a freshman in 2007. He was arrested in November 2008 in Gainesville, when campus police said he stole a $1,700 laptop, then threw it out his dormitory window when officers arrived to investigate.
The charges were dropped after he completed a pretrial intervention program for first-time offenders. Newton has said he bought the stolen computer from someone else.
