Only two teams from the same conference can play in BCS Bowls. If Oregon St. wins, Ohio St. is out. If Oregon St. loses, then it comes down to Ohio St. and Boise St. for the last BCS spot ... I have no idea who would get selected in that scenario.
For starters, only ONE non BCS team ranked in the top 12 is guaranteed an at-large spot in the BCS, so that would end up being Utah above Boise St. Now, if it came down to OSU or Boise for the final at-large spot, the bowl would DEFINITELY select the Buckeyes because of one thing....$$$$$. They would certainly bring in more fans and higher ratings for whoever they play (despite what Boise did to Oklahoma in the Fiesta).
What a system we have.
On a side note:I can't believe the Cotton or the Gator Bowl were even considering ND for a spot over a more deserving team last week!!!

I'm hurt by the comment of you not liking the Rose Bowl!!! It's the grand daddy of them all for a reason. I'm just biased because of where I live and it is a great place to watch a game and tailgate. But yes lately it's been a little dissapointing or the matchups aren't enticing.....except for that Texas USC game, which was a classic. Quite honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Ohio state get in and play USC again. With Beanie healthy and Prior running the offense I think they hang with SC this time. Let's face it Oklahoma and Florida will most likely be in the championship game. Penn State Oregon State in the Rose Bowl (hopefully). I wouldn't want to see USC against Bama or Texas or Utah. God forbid they have to play the ACC or Big East champ. I'm not an SC fan but as a college football fan give me SC vs. Ohio State on a neutral field and a healthy Buckeye squad. Athletic quarterbacks have given Pete Carrol trouble in the past...well at least Dennis Dixon last year and Vince Young.
The thought of OSU playing USC again makes me want to puke. Fortunately, that's not a possibility anymore.
The Rose Bowl just hasn't interested me much. I guess I haven't been a MAJOR college football fan nearly long enough, (beginning about in 2008) because I was too young. But, I just can't remember watching any good Rose Bowls recently (a classic one Big 10 versus Pac 10) and of course I am from the south.
I can respect the tradition, though.

I dont want to see usc in the bcs champ game...they are way too overrated and by reading this thread it just confirms my thought..USC isnt that impressive this year.

Why would Penn St vs USC be bad TV but Fla vs USC good TV? .. Joe Pa and the Nittany lions have just as big of a fan base as Fla if not bigger..
The only reason Id want to see USC vs Fla is so i can make money off USC as they dominate the overrated gators.. who play in this years most over rated conference in the land..

This has nothing to do with USC playing in the "CHAMPIONSHIP GAME". It's virtually impossible for them to get into the top 2 spots.
WCT, you don't pay attention. This thread is about Oregon State playing in the Rose Bowl plus Penn State already locked up 1 Rose Birth from the Big 10 so Buckeye fans don't have to worry about coming to "Cali". But Buckeye fans could got to Arizona or Miami or Louisiana....which would constitute a neutral field.

They can beat O-St. again and they can think how good they are, we will hear shit how they are somehow the best team in the country with a fluke lose.
But we all know a USC matchup will not be nice for PSU.
usc might score 20 in that one vs psu defense, would be similar to psu ohio state game
lets not 4get big 10 plays all of these bowl games on the road basically in the pac 10 and sec backyard (florida, nawlins,LA) just one year it would be interesting to c a warm weather team come up to the east or midwest in the winter wouldnt it?

Carolina, I agree with everything you stated, except for the placement of USC/Utah.
Oregon St. defeats Oregon - wins Pac-10
Oklahoma wins Big-12
Florida destroys Alabama and win the SEC
I believe after OU beats OkSt, they will jump into the #2 BCS spot. Then Florida will beat #1 Bama somewhat convincingly and will jump into the #1 spot. Thus, the Sugar Bowl will select Bama as its replacement pick, then the Fiesta Bowl will select Texas as its replacement pick. Then the Sugar will select USC for its at-large spot, and the Fiesta will select Utah with its at large spot (over the Big East champ).
THUS, This is what is gonna happen and it's what I wanna see!!!!
Bowl Game Breakdown 2009
National Championship Game:
#1 Florida vs. #2 Oklahoma
Orange Bowl:
ACC Champ vs. Cincinnati
Rose Bowl:
Penn State vs. Oregon State
Fiesta Bowl:
Texas vs. Utah
Sugar Bowl:
Alabama vs. USC

Fiesta has the first choice of the at large teams, and they very well could choose OSU over USC, if USC is not in the top 4 of the BCS(as they would be automatically in). The Fiesta likes OSU and their fans. There is also a ton of OSU alumni in that area. That decision would leave USC out of the BCS. If Oreg state loses to Oreg which very well may happen, then it is of course a moot point. The BCS selections, though, have little consideration over rankings and records and shot like that, sometimes.

Coming from a Penn State fan I really would not like to see us play Oregon State.again. They have improved tremendously after Penn State's loss but this match up sucks. Rose Bowl will draw millions if USC wins out and Oregon State loses next week. Dude the viewers for that game should have a tv rating of 15.5. Yes I do wish to see USC play the other top teams but I am sick of hearing Big 10 is low class and such. Ohio State has represented us poorly but Big 10 vs SEC in the bowl games is pretty close.

fuuf, the NC game automatically gets the #1 and 2 teams. I didn't think I needed to say that. the Rose takes the big 10 and pac 10 champs, unless they are in the title game, then it would get confusing. The fiesta then gets the Big 12 champ, or second place team if they are eligible, if the champ is in the NC game. The Sugar has the 1 or 2 SEC team, and the Orange has the ACC champ. There will then be 2 automatic teams , Utah, and Cincy and 1 at large spot left, basically USC or Ohio state. If the Fiesta bowl wants Ohio state, then they have first choice and they get who they want.

I dont know where you pulled this from, but I think I clearly explained the whole process, so obviously I understand that!
"I didn't think I needed to say that. the Rose takes the big 10 and pac
10 champs, unless they are in the title game, then it would get

For all practical purposes I think it is safe to assume that neither the Big 10 or Pac 10 will have a team in the BCS championship game. The chances are very very slim.
"The fiesta then gets the Big 12 champ, or second place team if they are eligible, if the champ is in the NC game."
Assuming OU/Texas (and presumably TT) win the Big 12, they will be in NCG. Then the Fiesta will get the 1st or 2nd choice of at large teams depending on where the Big12 champ is ranked (#1 or #2).
"The Sugar has the 1 or 2 SEC team, and the Orange has the ACC champ.

Sure, its POSSIBLE they would select Ohio St over USC. But given the fact that USC embarrassed OSU this year, the fact that USC has a great fanbase, will generate lots of money for their bowl, and OSU has already been in the Fiesta a couple of times recently, plus USC is much closer geographically. Okay I am rambling but you get my point. And, if it's the Sugar that has the selection first then I think they would take USC as well (dont forget the last 2 years against SEC)

During the PSU / Oregon St it was 42-7 in the start of the 4th and PSU was already pulling their starters. It coulda easily been 50+ to 7. So why exactly should PSU play a team it obliterated? Didn't USC lose to Oregon St. also?
I planned on going to the rose bowl.. I'm only holding off b/c if OregonSt, not going. I paid less than face value of tickets to see them lose to PSU. but would have to fly across the country, pay $250+ a ticket and get a hotel to watch the same crappy game again??
If PSU plays USC it would probably be +6 PSU. If they play Oregon St probably PSU -16. The rose bowl should break their tradition and grab another 1 loss team.

If PSU scores 10 points v. USC, then USC scores about 6. Penn State already licked the Beavers, now it's time to wear out the Trojans. Your command of the game is limited to the QB play? Seems you missed the fact that PSU held two of the best rushers in the country (Ringer and Wells) to less than 100 yds between them in two games.
And as crazy as it sounds, Ohio State was in the same position last year when they lost their next to last conf. game v. Illinois, and assumed they were going to Pasadena. Stuff happened and they played in the BCS game. I seriously doubt it will happen again but it is far from impossible.

Penn State is definitely a very good team but you can't be serious in thinking Penn State could hold USC to 6 points. I'm not going to argue who's a better team THIS YEAR or not because a case could be made for both teams because they both lost to lesser opponents this year.
However, historically speaking, is there a better big game coach then Pete Carroll? Other than the Texas national championship game, Pete Carroll hasn't lost a non-conference game since 2002! Average points scored for SC in BCS games since 2002... 40! And the Big 10 hasn't done much to slow down USC in the past six years including thrashings of Michigan (twice), Illinois, Ohio State and Iowa.
I still think it would be a great game but historically, I don't know why anyone would think that Carroll's USC team wouldn't be huge favorite against Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

i go to the u of oregon and osu in the rosebowl would make for shitty tv. we already saw penn state beat osu by 30. osu is the most overrated team in pac 10 history. they are terrible. oregon will easily win this game. and im sorry but youll see penn state lose to usc and osu will be where they belong and probably lose to another mountain west team byu, they already lost to utah.

As an Alabama Student, if we do lose to Florida in the SEC champ game then i'm hearing that we'll go to the Sugar but it won't be against USC...USC would play Texas/Oklahoma (whichever loses the BIG 12) in the Fiesta and BAMA would be stuck playing damn UTAH. And that would be awful for the TIDE because A) if we win everybody will say "big deal you beat a Mountain West team, which i would agree with. or B) if we were to lose it would be the end of the world. Not only that but the game would be Utah's national championship game, they have basically went as far as a mid major conference team has the possibility of going and BAMA would be pretty bummed after losing a chance for the National championship and although i don't think BAMA would play flat and not be fired up i do think that UTAH would have that extra edge which could be dangerous, but i personally think it would be a lot like the GEORGIA VS HAWAII slaughtering of last year and would be a slap in the face to a quality alabama team looking to prove itself against a national power.

No, I am not serious in thinking that Penn St can hold USC to 6 pts. My point was that it is equally silly to say USC would hold Penn St to 10. Also, I agree that USC would be a big favorite, probly double digits. Plus, it's essentially a home game for them.
But knocking Penn St just cuz they play in the Big Ten, do so at your own betting peril. They have won their last three bowl games -- if not for them you would be hearing a lot more about the abysmal B10 bowl history of late.
And it's convenient to forget the one common opponent -- Oregon St. OSU beat USC, but PSU not only whooped them, it was 42-7 after 3 quarters, when they pulled all the starters. They could have poured it on, as some teams do. Why did USC not have that luxury?
And as for eyedog -- "You actually think PSU can line up and run the ball down the USC defense throats for 80 yd. drives ?"
Yes I do. I would expect it all game long, but they could definitely drive on them, and on anyone.
I have great respect for USC and coach Carroll. But clearly there is a lot of disrespect for Penn State, and that's all I'm saying. We won't know for another week if these two teams will meet, but I sure hope they do.
One more thing -- this matchup would absolutely have great national interest. Possibly more than matching USC with a Big 12 or SEC team.

Best Case Scenario (Nightmare scenario for BCS committee):
Oregon State beats Oregon because one really wants to see them play in a major bowl.
USC somehow gets upset by ND or UCLA (very unlikely) but a 2 loss USC team with a weak strength of schedule.
Florida losses to Florida State. This is unlikely but don't count out the Noles in this rivalry game. But now you have a 2 loss Florida team. or..
Alabama losses to Auburn. Auburn is a talented but pee on themselves everytime they get a lead. Once again a huge rivalry game and I would not be suprised if Auburn pulled off the upset.
Oklahoma losses to Oklahoma State. 2 loss Oklahoma team would do them in and Texas wouls get the Birth to the Big 12 championship game...unless they choke against A&M.
Last but not least Mizzou beating Texas in Big 12 Championship game. This would really F' things up for the BCS committe because now you are looking at Mizzou in a BCS game which no one really wants to see them play.
I know these scenarios are very unlikely but the BCS really needs a problem just so they can get more pressure into a "playoff" system to determine a champion. I know they are locked into their current system for another 4 or 5 years but ratings would be horrible and maybe these college presidents would pull their heads out of their asses and get this shit straightened out!!!
If the above scenario took place you get Penn State now in the National Championship game vs. Utah watched by 15 people and Joe Pa gets another Nation al Championship and can tell his critics to F' off...lol!!!
