I beleive it occurs for multiple reasons, debt, poor families, not having the chance to go to the next level.  Especailly on games with big point spreads, the main thing is their teams win but the cover is a diffrent and seperate issue.

I would, why not if i have 50 K in student loans or my family is struggling to get by, my mom has two work two jobs and so on.

you praactically can call a hold on every down, easy to fumble trying to get those extra yards, muffed punt all too EZ to make look real.

How about the guys you scratch your head on say why did he catch the punt inside the 5 and fair catch to boot?

I watched Bridgewater last year shaving points so don't tell me its not possible.....he scored at will in the first half.....get to 4th quarter, march 80 yards every drive "at will"..... Then incomplete, incomplete, incomplete, field goal every single drive.....and guess what, missed the over by a couple points. And it's funny everyone was on the over. Way to obvious there Teddy. Yes college kids shave points when they know they can toy with the other team. Its a fact. ECU did it twice this year

What you guys are naïve about is the level of control a player has in college football.  An offensive player never plays defense.  Or special teams.  You're only on the field HALF THE TIME (actually a little less).  That means you can't control what happens in HALF THE GAME!

Think about it if you're the fixer.  Your QB can be shitty. But what happens if the other team's QB is even shittier? Or the defense scores a bunch of TDs?  You can't control that.

In basketball there's only 5 players and they play both offense and defense.  Of course you could fix that easily. It happens all the time.  And same w/ soccer.  The goalie has so much more influence than a football QB.

The Hawaii QB story is the only one that might be possible.  A fixer could count on huge odds so he won't care in case he loses. But I'd figure that massive bets on big underdogs raise lots of red flags with Vegas bookies.

It's unfortunate that if you screw up, it opens the floodgates for allegations of shaving points. Crap happens on the field of play. A receiver runs the run route on a timing pattern. The cornerback gets picked and falls behind his man by a step and gives up a score. A running back fumbles because the center misses his block. Gamblers are too quick to yell fix or point shaving when the contest  does not go their way.

Wow you guys really are that slow. Its funny. If you think a elite qb facing a garbage team can't shave points you are a special person.

Just like the onside kick in the final mins of the OU/Ore game a few years back.. Im sure Duck Fan remembers...  Sooners OBVIOUSLY recovered onside kick. Officials IMMEDIATELY signaled a recovery by Ducks...everyone and their Mom saw that the OU guy was walking off the field with the ball....

I lean more to officials on the take BUT i agree that point shaving has and will always be around..esp Basketball

Just like the onside kick in the final mins of the OU/Ore game a few years back.. Im sure Duck Fan remembers...  Sooners OBVIOUSLY recovered onside kick. Officials IMMEDIATELY signaled a recovery by Ducks...everyone and their Mom saw that the OU guy was walking off the field with the ball....

college football is bent as a nine bob note

you see it in the games where a team should

win by 21 but only wins by 7

its always the games that are stick out

too good to be true lines

It is normal in sports for the losing team to play harder at the end of the game and if you are fixing a game, you don't let it come down to the last drive if you can help it.

Point shaving most definitely goes on.  I do not believe that teams or players would be willing to throw a game, but if you're a 35 pt favorite, how tough is it to blow the cover without ever putting the victory in jeopardy? (ECU v SMU....cough, cough)

There is no way in the world that all of these games are left up to chance.  There's no chance in hell for that to happen.  You need your head examined if you think that sports gambling is legit.  Where there's money, there's corruption.

You have to be really naive to think college athletes don't point shave. THERE ARE SO MANY GAMES every week and it's so easy to do it and make it look like it was just a amateur mistake.

Nevada keeps an eye on this all the time.  When heavy money comes in on one side phones are ringing between sportsbook managers. They watch this crap pretty close.  Can they stop it?  No.  Is it widespread? No.

I mentioned earlier Hedake Smith (guard @ Arizona St. basketball) about getting caught shaving points.  It was actually Vegas that caught him.  They noticed large amounts of money being bet on certain ASU games.  Big red flag.  Especially if they have never seen the bettors before.  Anyways it was investigated and he was charged.  Vegas would hate to lose sports gambling because of widespread cheating.  They have a BIG dog in the fight to prevent this.  Sports bettors also play craps, blackjack, roulette etc...  It would cost them billions.

I remember back in the 90's Hedake Smith (guard on Ariz. St. basketball team) got busted for point shaving.  So we know that it does happen.  I have never heard of a case in college football though.

I read up on this game b/c I was curious.  Moniz threw 0 interceptions but fumbled 2X.  And was constantly pressured all game.  Hawaii had 2 other fumbles.  And the Hawaii D gave up 40 points.

If the game was fixed, then the entire OL and Defense had to be on the fix as well. That's a lot of guys you need to keep quiet.  Plus, who cares if he stepped into a casino? If a guy fixed a game, the LAST place he'd want to show up is a casino.
