After seeing this I wasnt as concerned! My conclusion is simple Michigan is still two years away with the recruiting they have done to be legitimate contenders. I was at the game and man oh man was it tough to watch. I found myself laughing over how bad the defense looked.

with that said I think Michigan is ok but wouldnt put that much stock into the first two games.

Bama much more established and deeper. Better overall talent. Simply outmatched Michigan which I have never seen before. These are RR guys knowone from lloyd carrs class is playing. We dont have that big O line we use to or the D lines we use to. This isnt the same Michigan and hasnt been inwhile. Alabama proved that!

But in two years be careful!

What I believe is that the signing rules should be homogenized across college football. I think it's ridiculous that one conference has one set of rules, and another conference has a different set of rules. This is mind boggling to me. There should be one set of rules that everyone adheres to. That would put the over-signing debate to rest once and for all.

The rule that is standard across the board is that schools can add a maximum of 25 scholarship athletes per season, and can have a maximum of 85 on their roster. That is the same for all teams. The debate centers around how teams ultimately comport with those scholarship restrictions rules.

Traditionally the SEC has been very flexible with their schools in how they achieve their scholarship numbers. The Big 10, on the other hand, is very strict. For example, in the past a SEC school could recruit let's say 30 players. Then let's say 3 don't qualify academically, and two opt to play baseball. That would bring the SEC school in compliance with the 25 maximum rule. The three non-qualifiers would then probably go the JUCO route in hopes of potentially qualifying academically in the future.

In the Big 10, as I understand it, they have a hard cap of 25. What that does is it tacitly prevents schools from recruiting marginal players. In other words, a Big 10 school cannot afford to recruit 25 players and have 3 non-qualifiers, and two that opt to play baseball lest they end up with a class of 20 scholarship players versus 25. That would put that school at a huge competitive disadvantage in the future.

The SEC has now cracked down of the so-called over-signing by also instituting a hard 25 recruit limited . . . sort of.

Personally I think the old way is better because it gives team a lot more flexibility, and it allows schools to recruit marginal kids (which are usually kids from impoverished families) that may otherwise never have a chance at a college education. The system now encourages schools to shun these type of kids. That's also why we are galso seeing an academic fraud epidemic as schools try to get blue chip prospects qualified. Auburn is in the middle of a nasty NCAA academic fraud investigation right now. That should make national news in the next day or so.

Anyhow, as I said, whatever the rules are, they should be the same for everyone. I do agree that the lack of recruiting flexibility in the Big 10 has hampered its member schools' ability to compete to some degree.

As far as Saban cutting players, I don't think that is really the case. You are always going to recruit some players who are not going to do what they are suppose to do or not do, such as go to class, smoke weed etc. These kids weed themselves out, just as they do at other schools. So you will always have a certain amount of attrition. If Saban recruits a kid and he does everything he's suppose to do, even though he may never play a meaningful game for Alabama, he'll keep his scholarship and remain on the team. I can give many example of both types of players.

Thanks it does help. Well clearly the talent the past 10 years between the sec and others is more clear than ever. SEC never dominated like they have recently. I dont know how long it will take for the gap to close!

I would not gauge how good or bad Michigan's defense is based on how they performed against a triple option team. Triple option teams make a lot of defenses look bad. In fact Alabama's worst defense performance last season came against FCS Georgia Southern - a triple option team. This primarily comes down to a lack of familiarity.

Saban actually addressed this very issue in a press conference recently. He said in the future he wants to schedule teams that will help his defense prepare for the types of offenses they will see in the future. In other words, no triple option teams because those type of offenses don't help Alabama's defense with future preparation.

I agree with mtp. In the first game they face a really good offensive team in Alabama. In the second game they face a triple option team. I don't think either is indicative of what they'll see in conference play.

I have a ton of respect for Michigan's defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. I think losing CB Blake Countess for the season is a huge blow to Michigan because he was probably their best defensive player, but I still think Mattison will have them playing pretty good defense when they get into conference play.

I think the problems are deeper than just an uneven recruiting playing field, which I think there clearly has been between SEC member schools and Big 10 member schools. How much of an impact this uneven playing field has had is certainly debatable, but the fact that the recruiting playing field has been uneven is not IMO.

Most of the recruiting battles between SEC schools are for local kids. Alabama, Georgia , Florida & LSU are usually not battling each other for a kid from Ohio for example. Invariably they are battling each other for kids from Alabama, Georgia or Florida. So the problem for a school like Michigan that is geographically situated in an area with a thin talent pool is how will they lure a kid from Tampa, Florida to Ann Arbor??? That's a tough sell when the kid undoubtedly has a plethora of good local options.

Although not personally a fan, that's part of Urban Meyer's appeal. Ohio State is banking on his ties to the southeast to draw some of that rich talent from the south to Ohio. And as I said, I don't care for the guy, but as Michigan fans will soon find out, he's a son-of-a-bitch on the recruiting trail.

Even Saban has lost several top recruits in the south because of Tuscaloosa's distance from a recruit's home. It's not a big secret that the #1 recruit in the country in 2011, Jadeveon Clowney, preferred Alabama over South Carolina, but chose the Cocks because of proximity to home. The same with Greg Reid. He too wanted to attend Alabama, but his mother overruled him, and he went to Florida State which was also close to home. Another example are Miami kids. Tuscaloosa is almost 1,000 miles away from Miami, so that's always a tough sell for Saban. The point is Saban is not immune to these type of geographic complications either, and if he, has a tough time overcoming the proximity to home objection, how much more difficult will it be for Brady Hoke and his staff???

I think geographic proximity to where the majority of the blue chip recruits hail from is a much, much bigger factor in recruiting than an uneven over-signing playing field.

U know I get what u are saying Jimmy,but I think u would agree that Saban is a MASTER TIME MANAGER..He is a no nonsense guy and Im starting to think he just out works everybody.I do find it odd and u rarely see his kids get in trounle in Ttown...seems like the good ole boys have each other s back.Which is very smart if u think about it bc young kids do stupid things.Im afraid Ark had their best chance to beat Al 2 yrs ago and didnt do it.U havent seen Saban s team not prepared since they got beat by Utah in Sugar Bowl.

Jimmy, do you think Tenn / Fla is going to 3? its still 2.5 at my book. i like tenn but it seems like everybody does which makes me a little nervous. regardless, i'm thinking i may pound it now and it i decide if don't like it later i can always hedge the opposite side at 3.

Bookmaker has it at 3 right now. I will probably sty away from that game. I think there are better opportunities to be had.

with you on Ohio State, just don't have the guts to pull the trigger on ULM... I know Auburn is going through some tough times this season, but I'm too afraid that the WarHawks may still have their heads in the clouds from knocking off the Hogs last weekend. A&M worries me, because I'm not sure how they rebound after losing to the Gators, a game which they should have won... I like USC as well... Best of luck this weekend, hope you continue kicking ass
