FIU has done a great job of jumping ahead of opponents this season, holding opponents scoreless in four of their first seven games. For the season, the Panthers have outscored the opposition 62-29 in the opening period. However, FIU has had troubles in the fourth quarter, being outscored 61-27.
The Troy defense has been hurt repeatedly this season by big plays, particularly in the passing game. Through six games, the Trojans have surrendered 19 plays of 30 or more yards, 16 of them on passes, with 10 of those going for touchdowns. Of those 19 plays, eight went for 50 or more yards, with i ve of those going for scores.
The Trojans have been been disappointing on defense over the last few seasons. Troy ranked 73rd in the nation in rush defense, 100th in pass defense, 89th in total defense and 84th in scoring defense in 2010.
GET OFF THE FIELD - The FIU defense has done a good job of getting opposing offenses off the field this season. The Panthers are third in the Sun Belt Conference with an opponents’ third down conversion percentage of 36.8 (39-of-106).
REMARKABLE TURNAROUND - To explain the Panthers’ rise to the top of the Sun Belt Conference one needs to look no further than the improvements in the running game and the defense. In 2010 the Panthers ranked 27th in the country in rushing offense afterfinishing 107th in 2009. The Panthers’ defense, which ranked 119th in the Nation in 2009, finished 2010 ranked 61st in the country.
