Early leans:

Arizona State -11 (too much talent and Sendek has shown he will run it up on teams if he can)
Washington -1 (too much rebounding on Wash and dissension on AZ)
Cal +9 (too many points)
Arkansas -5.5 (Fading the Bama turmoil, Arkansas a different team at home)
St. Mary's +8.5 (REALLY like this play -- is Gonzaga THAT much better than St. Mary's? I don't think so)

Anyone else on the same or different sides?

OU -- Arkansas isn't the greatest team in the land, but they sure seem to play well at home when they have their crowd backing them. Any reason to think that the Bama game won't get a good turnout for the Arkansas fans?

Please let me know what type of turmoil you are referring to within Arkansas' ranks.

KAP im surprised your not backing UCLA with a goofy line like this. UCLA has played well defensively except for this last game and Howland should have really stressed help side D cause i did not see it against WASH. CAL is going to get a heavy do against a pissed off UCLA team at home. I just find this line extremely odd for they way both teams have played this season. I think the oddsmakers are expecting a big game out of UCLA defensively and offensively... Sorry for cluttering up your thread buddy.

kapono,

I have somewhat the same feeling about Wash, just overall better team, but I really don't like that they are coming off a big win and then could be looking ahead to ASU. If this game was in different spot, would be all over them. Still leaning that way though.  St.Mary's I am all over, but there are some stats that are scary, Home team in thsi series is 8-0 L8, Zags are 32-1 in 5 yrs @ McCarthey Center. St<Marys is on the nations longeest winning streak as well with 15. 1 other ? for you, sayaing all 3 play for SC, what do you think the line is and do you like them? I think they get this one tonight. GL bro

I understand what you guys are saying on WASH but you really have to take in the consideration of the type of team WASH is playing away from home. Not very good...

  • -Definantly could not back Wash St on the road
  • Im thinking that Washington struggles on the road tonight..I am a sucker for Zona at home though this year....Got lucky against Houston...I like Zona
  • I agree with you on Cal....Cal is still getting no respect and I dont think that UCLA is ready to blow many people out.
  • Did you watch Arkansas play against Auburn on Saturday ? Man I would not lay points with them anywhere right now....They looked very bad
  • That Zags line is really high....I was looking to play the Zags but that line is ridiculous...Zags have revenge and should win but that is too many points IMO

Good luck man.......I am very interested to see what that USC/Stanford line is.....Is Lewis coming back tonight ?

Bird -- yeah that's the truth. They have beat up on the teams they were supposed to beat  up on. I've got to imagine they've been looking forward to the Gonzaga showdown for weeks. We'll see what they are made of. I saw St. Mary's live from courtside against Cal-State Bakersfield, not much learned except that Patty Mills can turn it on another gear whenever he so chooses and that their big guys can shoot free throws pretty well.

I understand the ASU concerns as well, but I think they just have an infintely more talented team this year than WSU. I don't know who on Bennett's team could lock up Harden.

"KAP im surprised your not backing UCLA with a goofy line like this. This is a goofy line, and that's my main concern. Monty is a pretty damn good coach and can usually get his team up to keep important games close. Most of all I think Cal matches up well with UCLA. They have athletic guards that can shoot the three and aren't scared of defensive pressure. They have a couple of big bodies that, in all truth, are better underneath than Aboya and Keefe. I doubt Cal wins, but I think they keep it close up till the end when UCLA gets a few crucial stops and ices it at the FT line. I see a 5-6 point UCLA victory tonight.

And it's never cluttering up my thread, don't worry. That's why we have these threads is to discuss the games.

Appreciate the thoughts/insight.

Jedi  --  good thinking on that situational aspect, hadn't thought about it, was looking more at the matchup angle.

Capa, schust -- ST  MARYS

Illini  --  I don't watch SEC hoops that closely. I know Arkansas got drubbed by Auburn, but I think they can get it back together against Alabama. There has to be some sort of downward effect on Bama from their coach bailing on them halfway through the season (with rumors swirling that it was something besides what publicly was the given reason for his stepping away). What's your thoughts on the game?

tmpeus  -- will head over there in a few.

bracks  -- glad to hear you like Washington to,  but I will admit situationally its kinda scary. Romar is actually a pretty decent coach though, so I'm hoping he can prevent any look ahead possibilities.  Luckily with the line where it is, they only have to eek out the win for us to cover on that one.  The trends on St. Mary's are scary as hell,  but I think this is the spot where St. Mary's can buck the trends (at least ATS).

bracks  -- forgot about the USC line. I'd say it will probably be something like USC -1.5 or so. Stanford is a good team but I think home court will swing the game in USC's favor. I'd imagine SC to win by 3-4.

Bird --  I agree with you on Wash totally if this line were at 5-6. All we need is an eeked out win and we take down the cash, so the only look ahead problems are basically if they lose SU,  and I just think they are too talented of a team to do that.  Plus, like someone said earlier, I think Arizona is in total disarray and has basically given up on the season.  Jordan Hill is an absolute beast though, but I think Brockman  can at least neutralize him.

Papi  -- WSU sucks, which is sad cause I like Bennett and one of the partners at my firm is a WSU grad who is like a second father to me. He was so happy when Low and Weaver were there because it was the first time since Leaf that he had a reason to be excited about being a WSU alum.

Thanks for the Arkansas heads up. May have to switch them from a lean to a no play based on the input in this thread. That's why I love this board -- people can cover each other's weak spots and save them

Haven't heard anything about Lewis. That -1.5 line is assuming he plays. If not, I could see it swinging to Stanford -2 or so.

One interesting thing about this UCLA team that could be telling -- Farmar, Afflalo, and Mbah a Moute really were the leaders of this Bruins team the last four-five years. Now that they are gone, everyone has been expecting Collison to step up and be that leader, but he has really shrunk in big games (IMO)  this year. Not only that, but look what freshman Drew Gordon said after the Washington game:
"Right now we just don't have enough heart," said Gordon, UCLA's freshman center. "Basically, it's what it boils down to. We run our plays, execute, but the other team wants it more. We're definitely going to have to fix that, and I think this game is a true wake-up call to bounce back and hopefully get a little more hungry.

"We're just going on reputation."

I am going to argue here because the team everyone sees in ZONA is there road play. They have competed very well at home i got a big writeup in my space check it out...

I'm sorry, but when a FRESHMAN on the team is the one who has to call guys out for "lacking heart", it really makes me wonder about the leadership on the team internally. That's something that Collison should be saying as the senior All-American PG. Scary.

I think UCLA wins this game but doesn't cover the chalk.

Other CAL @ UCLA notes:
  • Last year UCLA needed a MIRACLE shot from Shipp to win the game at Pauley, and Shipp was probably out of bounds when he shot the ball over the back of the backboard. Anyone remember that?
  • Two of Cal's best players -- Boykin and Christopher -- are Southern California kids who might be looking to pound on the school that passed on them and caused them to go North. I'd also expect them to have lots of friends and family at the game
