i don't believe in free money b/c of OT, fouling at the end, etc.  However, when ND starts "going to the burn" they typically hold the ball till about 10 seconds left on the shot clock on almost every possession and then start their offense.  They did it the last 8 games last year and went Under every single time.  Apparently, they went to the true "burn" for the first time against Pitt this year and that went way under as well.

nd...im in the same boat..i think they will destroy depaul but having trouble also pulling the trigger.

why would they go to the burn against DePaul? I would think that would give the Blue Demons a better chance to win...

Irish upseted Pitt with their "burn" offense last time out. In other words, Coach Mike Brey has his players run offense late in the shot clock, thus reducing the number of possessions in the game. It worked, and we have not seen the last of the "burn."  Notre Dame scored 37 of its 56 points with less than 11 seconds left on the shot clock.  Now that's eating some clock.  I'm not sure how the "burn" will come into play with a pressing team like Purnell's, but I do know they've turned the ball over a ton against teams that have gone to the press (@ Marq, @ SJ, Cincy).  I think we'll see it at times but they're not going to pass up the easy buckets in transition in which this Depaul team allows.  As always, good luck on the action.

It makes sense for a team to go into this so-called "burn" offense when they're in an opponent's gym and the opponent is clearly inferior to your team. Teams have tried this all the time, some have done well, some it has backfired. I see no reason that they would do it against a team like Depaul. From a coaching standpoint, it just wouldn't make sense. He's ran with teams that he's better than his entire career. If it does happen and they do go into "burn" mode, Depaul is still going to have to stop Notre Dame from putting the ball in the hoop. Regardless of if the shot is taken at 22 seconds or 8 seconds on the shot clock, they still have to stop it.

If you're using the last so many games last year and the Pitt game this year to analyze this so-called "burn", then here are the teams they faced:

2011 - Pitt
2010 - West Virginia (BE Tourney)
2010 - Pitt (BE Tourney)
2010 - Seton Hall (BE Tourney)
2010 - Marquette
2010 - Uconn
2010 - Georgetown
2010 - Pitt

If they beat Pitt last year doing it, why not try it again? In fact, they beat them twice last year doing it. A vast majority of these teams listed above are more athletic on just about every level than what Notre Dame brings in. Not only are they more athletic, almost all of them are more talented and faster up and down teams.

Brey's a genius, mentioned it before. He's one of the few coaches in the country that can take a few days and have his team prepared for a totally different brand of basketball night in and night out. Hopefully I'm right tonight with my guess. If not, oh well. Maybe they'll burn it up, and let Depaul get it's first Big East Victory since last January. Just a unit.

I'm seeing 140 at my book... tempted to go over now.  Like i said earlier, UND may go to the burn a few times during the game if they're struggling in transition and feel like Depaul is completely dictating the pace... but they're not going to pass up those easy transition buckets and if they're coming early and often, they'll be running the entire gane.  The first five minutes will tell a lot...

Burn offense that theyve been running last few games that brey has talked about.  49 possessions vs pitt.  Last year they had 9 straight to end the year at 61 possessions or less.

Not that I usually like to pull quotes from coaches bc they say the same old bs quite a bit, brey did say they would have to slow down the style depaul wants to play which is fast... I'd be careful there my man.  They did it vs every single team the last 10 games last year, including ODU in the tournament and seton hall, st johns, uconn and it worked quite well.  They didn't just pick and choose when they used it.

Like Wofford fast or slow. Finally starting to play like the team that I thought they would be at the beginning of the year. Fell behind early in the first meeting and couldn't recover. More veteran team, more balanced team, and more importantly, the better defense that has been in these situations in the past. Charleston's needs to score to win. Wofford can win on off nights. As for the total, I would hope for some defensive intensity with a title on the line, and if that's the case, then Wofford should control this game. Revenge at stake for a chance at the title...I better get their best effort. 

Like all of those intangibles in what essentially is the SoCon title game. I'm not including the north division, those teams are awful this year.

Reason I say they'll like to get up and down is b/c they can compete when they do that. They struggle when they play teams like their last three who are snails: Poly, Davis, Pacific. That's bout as brutal of a three-game stretch of slow basketball as you'll see any team go through this year.

Might help, might hurt. Just depends. I saw no value in either side. Riverside did beat them on the road. Northridge on a three game roady where the first two games they probably weren't supposed to win in Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. Third roady and pretty big letdown.

Still value Northridge a bit better, just hate the spot.

Thanks! Yeah, I am not a fan of the spot as well, but I tend to give less weight to "spot" when dealing with the "Riversides" of the world.  Dont know if I am right in doing that.

Any opinion on Tenn/Aub nropp? I really liked this spot for Auburn, but I also expected to get 10 or more.

Explained above. It would make sense to use it when you have no depth in the Big East tournament where you have to play four games in four days back-to-back. I think it's an over-reaction to the usage at Pitt. If Team A upsets Team B last year and does so by using a different method, more than likely, that team is going to resort to that same method the following year if they want a chance to win. 

Probably spent too much time on the game, just a tiny play. All I'm trying to point out is that he's had over a week to prepare, and I doubt that week was spent on beating the pressure, settling down the offense, and taking a shot with 5 seconds to go on the clock. Doing that would only benefit Depaul. 

Really no argument on either side. Either they burn or they don't burn. Same thing for every game on the card. One team can slow it down out of character, one team can choose to all out run. Some teams miss, some teams make. Same risk, it's gambling. And with that risk, I'm willing to say he don't burn.

SEC hasn't been my cup of tea. Have tried to avoid Auburn at all costs as well.

Even if they don't play the burn, they were playing slow in conference even until the pit game...
