would love to here your thoughts on oher big south clubs, specifically winthrop and Gardner-Webb

They were top 50 last year (45), and i don't expect a dropoff on that side of the ball, should only get better with fresh turning into soph. Doesn't really seem like it because they play so fast.

Haven't worked on too much of the Big South, hope to get to it soon.

Also, does Arizona take some confidence into the game or are they down on themselves if they lose to Duquesne. A couple big question marks in terms intangibles leading up to that game. As far as winning that half of the West, it’s them and WMU. Maybe throw some consideration to the Chippewas for the sole purpose of Ziegler. CMU had a brilliant recruiting class come in and Ziegler is showing that he wants to win now, not build the program for a few years. I probably still give Ball State the nod in the West, but I can’t put them ahead of Kent State, Ohio, or Akron in terms of being a tournament team I don’t think. Time will tell. Offensively, they’re very sound. They had some major turnover issues with the PG position last year. Defensively, I was expecting for them to take a hit, but with what you are saying and what I’ve read, it looks like they may take a move forward. The trip to Canada they were very impressive defensively. I have the home date with Butler circled; schedule sets up nicely before to prepare for that one for a good week. It could be a very good win, and a great spot for value. You sound like you got a good grasp on the team, feel free to stop by share your thoughts.

Thanks, appreciate your work. I'm not sold on Central. They were one of the 20 least efficient offensive teams in the country last year. A large part of that was because of the Ziegler kid. The kind of shots he can create for himself are not the kind of shots he can also hit for a reasonable percentage. I think he'd be awesome on a high major team as the third or fourth option. Asking him to shoulder the load is probably asking him too much. Don't discount the loss of Jalin Thomas either.

A couple last points on BSU. A buddy of mine who plays in the Indy summer league says that Scaife really held his own defensively and offensively this summer against some really good competition. Specifically, he held his own against eric gordon; Eric struggled against scaife. Your mention of BSU's defense was right on cue, but if Scaife can buy in defensively, they should be ok. I think they fear teams with two post players. Kam struggles to defend the post and Jones is average at best. I don't know of any MAC teams with two solid post players so that shouldn't be an issue in conference play. That might be the only time they really miss perry. Otherwise, this team is much better off this year than last. Your point about BSU still behind Akron,Kent and Ohio might be right but I know the loss to Kent last year in the tournament really bothered them. That is a big reason why they spent so much time in the weight room. They were physically overmatched. Taylor had no way to scheme around it. Their focus is on beating the East and have spent much of the summer working on the things needed to beat those teams.

IMO, the difference is Koch. Once he is back this is a totally different team. From all indications, this summer, he tore up the open gyms. He left the players speechless with the plays he was making. This transfer was a real 'get' if he can stay healthy (something he hasn't been able to do). Koch being healthy is the difference between them competing against the East or falling short again. GL this season to you too. Thanks!!

    nropp11,

    great information - thank you.

Where would you place VCU in the Colonial this season? They lost most of their guys, but Burgess is still there, and they always seem to reload fine.

Strictly from a wins standpoint, what would be a few sleeper teams (potentially smaller conferences and not as well known) that could rack up a lot of W's this season in your estimation.

I'm not completely sold on CMU either, but Ziegler coached teams always have a good defense and that will keep them in ballgames if they can find just an ounce of offense outside of the coaches kid. In my offseason work, it wasn't really the returnees that I focused on but the plethora of talent they brought in:

McBroom - PG from Hollywood. Can shoot it from anywhere, and is quick. Takes pressure off Ziegler bringing the ball up. Had two really good exhibition games.

Keel - Pure Shooter. Coming off the bench now, not sure how long that will last.

Mbaigoto - This kid signed with Clemson a few years back.

I think early on, they'll depend on Ziegler to score, but once they get into conference season, they'll have enough talent to compete on a nightly basis, and I assume a bunch of that talent is going to be in the form of newcomers rather than returnees. If I was sold on the newcomers, I would have projected them right up there with WMU and BSU, but I can't quite do that yet.

I put them at #4. Have Mason, ODU, & Drexel ahead of em. Think they're going to struggle defensively. Offensively, they'll be just as good as anyone in the conference. But defensively, they've fallen off and lost a few key pieces. I contemplated putting them ahead of Drexel in the #3 slot, but they travel to Drexel (who probably has a shot at a top 10 defense this year) so that was the deal breaker. Wouldn't shock me if they have a game or two lead coming down the stretch, but the last road-trip is brutal and they don't play George Mason until the end of the conference schedule, which is rather awkward that they play them twice in a 10 day period towards the end.

Conference-wise, first one that comes to mind is Denver. They have a really, really, really tough out of conference schedule, but they will have a few chances against bigger schools to pick up some wins. When they get into Sun Belt play, they should do well, in fact, they should do really well. They're probably on my list as having the most favorable conference schedule out of any team in the country. Their away games shouldn't scare them, and while it's early, the schedule just looks extremely easy once they get into conference play. Assuming they stay healthy, this team should score quite a bit, and that's saying a lot for a team who will probably be one of the slowest paced in the country yet again. They started off the conference season 5-0 or 6-0 last year and tanked. I don't expect that to happen again.

In contrast, how about a really good team that won't get any wins early? Long Beach State.

    Check out this non-conference schedule:

    @ Pitt
    @ San Diego St
    @ Montana (Montana = GOOD)
    @ Louisville
    @ Kansas
    @ North Carolina
    @ Xavier (neutral court)

    One more - Iona.

They get Purdue on a neutral court, and travel to Marshall & Richmond, two teams who probably aren't going to be as good as they were last year, and that's about all the strength of their out of conference schedule. Other than that, look out. MAAC is definitely down this year. Fairfield will be decent, but Iona's big three (Glover, Machado, and the Jones kid who transferred from Arizona), they're about as good of a combo of 3 you will find on any small school team in the country.

NROPP, awesome thread. MoneyBags is back. Glad u'r still writing these threads. Happened to check the forum as I am getting the itch for the start of the NCAABB's. This thread was the first one and I remember last year's stuff from you.

Alot of good info so far, read all the posts. Got a question buddy, I haven't seen anything from you about the Horizon League. Any pre-season thoughts? Big Detroit fan here, I bet you might remember me! Doesn't look good with Eli Holman not on the team. Any hope? Also, would like the hear any thoughts on the BIG SKY conference.

    Thanks, J Dubb

I remember - I was actually considering Detroit leaping past Butler, but I held back. Holman is a big loss for a team that already had depth issues coming in.

I've been losing sleep over the Big Sky. Montana or Weber State, Montana or Weber State, Montana or Weber State. I think ultimately I'm going to roll w/ Montana b/c of the better defense. Weber State has an extremely talented group though.

Put my monopoly money on Akron, and the Arizona under in the league contests.

If someone were to walk up to me and hand me a ten dollar bill, i'd buy a lottery ticket before I invested in any of these games tonight.

Cool man, Montana/Weber St were strong there last year as well. So not much turnover or change there I guess. Butler still tops for Horizon. Detroit not much improvement I don';t think. Hard to find good information on these smaller conferences. Just always love betting on these smaller teams for some reason. One of my favt's last year was the Eastern Washington from the Big Sky.
