West Virginia vs Oklahoma State picks, predictions Sept. 26

Oklahoma State star RB Chuba Hubbard rushed for 93 yards last week against Tulsa. With questions surrounding the Cowboys' QB, he could get a lot more action this week against West Virginia.

In college football betting, and in life overall, I appreciate a strong mullet. Oh sure, you’ve probably grown one out just for fun at some point, but to sustain such a hairstyle for years on end is sincere a dedication to plenty of business and the occasional party.

Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy has blazed an unmatched trail when it comes to magnificent mane maintenance, but it’s his head coaching acumen that interests college football bettors. The Cowboys struggled in their season opener against Tulsa, and now their Big 12 opener looms against the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Mountaineers Head Coach Neal Brown may have a boring haircut, but his West Virginia squad is an exciting group that can put up points. Which team will be a cut above on Saturday? Here are our best NCAA football picks and predictions for the September 26 game between the Mountaineers and Cowboys in Stillwater, Oklahoma, at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Betting trend to know

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Mountaineers make the trip down south having had an extra week to prepare for the Pokes. They disposed of FCS school Eastern Kentucky 56-10 back on September 9 with quarterback Jarret Doege passing for 228 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Leddie Brown and Alec Sinkfield combined for 246 yards and four touchdowns. The West Virginia defense faces its first real test this weekend, and senior lineman Darius Stills leads the way.

Oklahoma State’s performance will depend on the health of quarterback Spencer Sanders, who injured his ankle in a lackluster 16-7 win against Tulsa. Sanders spent the last few days in a walking boot, though he’s got big-time weapons at his disposal. Chuba Hubbard led the nation in rushing last season, and former first-team All-American WR Tylan Wallace must be accounted for. The Cowboys defense limited Tulsa to only seven points, but the Golden Hurricane didn’t help itself much — Tulsa was penalized 15 times for 120 yards.

Gundy’s unique ability to thrive at Oklahoma State while firmly in the shadow of the Sooners is impressive. I expect his Cowboys to show up this week, but trotting out a banged-up quarterback while laying more than a touchdown is too much to ask.

PREDICTION: West Virginia +8.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Cowboys were as sloppy as a six-dollar Supercut against the Golden Hurricane, and their ability to put up points will take a hit if Sanders isn’t healthy and Shane Illingworth gets the call instead.

The Under is 5-0 in West Virginia’s last five games as an underdog, and the early money immediately dropped the total to 52. It’s the right side.

PREDICTION: Under 52 (-110)

Player prop pick

Hubbard rushed for “only” 93 yards against Tulsa, and with the Cowboys either playing an injured starter or inexperienced backup QB, I like them to lean on their workhorse.

PREDICTION: Chuba Hubbard Over 134.5 rushing yards Over (-110)
