Week 3 of the CFL season kicks off Thursday night at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, with the Ottawa Redblacks taking on the Montreal Alouettes.

The defending Grey Cup champions are a perfect 2-0 to start the season and will be at home for the first time this season, but the upset-minded Redblacks are coming off a win over the Blue Bombers as 7-point underdogs. Here are my latest CFL picks for Thursday, June 20.

Redblacks vs Alouettes prediction

My best bet
Under 47.5 (-105 at FanDuel)

My analysis
After having a bye in Week 1, the Ottawa Redblacks kicked off their 2024 CFL season with a huge 23-19 upset win at home against the Blue Bombers. They were able to pull off the upset thanks to dominating the run game, time of possession, and forcing two turnovers while not turning the ball over once themselves. Running back Ryquell Armstead had 95 yards on 16 carries.

Meanwhile, the Montreal Alouettes have begun their Grey Cup title defense with consecutive road victories over Winnipeg and Edmonton. They've done so with excellent defense, forcing six turnovers and not allowing a single “big play”.

In a small sample size, these are two of the better defenses in the CFL despite both being middle of the pack offensively. In four meetings last season, the Alouettes won all four games but in low-scoring affairs. Those games combined for 39.3 points per game, with three of four staying Under the total.

While the Alouettes are a little more pass-heavy than the Redblacks, they may not see a ton of time of possession to be able to put up big numbers. They lost the time of possession battle last week in their win over the Elks and that came despite winning the turnover battle 3-0.

The Alouettes may play a little better at home than they did in the first two contests, but this game still screams Under. The Redblacks will need to play excellent football just to reach 20 points in this contest and I'm not expecting an offensive explosion from the Als.

Redblacks vs Alouettes same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 47.5

Ryquell Armstrong Over 62.5 rushing yards

Tyson Philpot anytime touchdown

The Redblacks will rely heavily on Ryquell Armstead to carry their offense this season and he will be especially heavily used against the defending Grey Cup champions. His total is sitting at 62.5 despite the Als allowing 82 rushing yards per game and 3.8 yards per carry. Armstead should easily see the volume needed to surpass this number.

Finally, we'll throw in an anytime touchdown scorer for Montreal. Wide receiver Tyson Philpot seems to be a favorite target of Cody Fajardo this season with 15 catches on 17 targets. He also had two touchdowns in Week 1 and I expect another trip to the endzone on Thursday.
