Spread analysis

Off to an 8-0 start for the third time in franchise history, the Blue Bombers needed a fourth-quarter turnaround to keep their unbeaten streak alive. Trailing 28-25 halfway through the final period, the Blue and Gold scored 11 points and held the 4-2 Calgary Stampeders to a field goal to pull off a 35-28 victory in which Winnipeg covered as a short road underdog.

Receiver Dalton Schoen recorded his sixth touchdown of the season with less than five minutes remaining on a 25-yard pass from Zach Collaros, who finished with 270 yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-30 passing. Schoen and Nic Demski both snagged two touchdowns while running back Brady Oliveira racked up a season-high 110 yards on the ground, including a long of 31 yards.

Calgary was held to 219 yards through the air but put up 139 yards on 24 carries. The Stampeders scored 15 of their 28 points on field goals and reached paydirt twice in the third quarter on 2-yard rushes by Ka’Deem Carey. Winnipeg has now allowed nine touchdowns through eight games and an average of 17.8 points per contest, the best mark in the league.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Montreal gives up 27.6 points per game, second most in the CFL, and dropped its fifth game of the season in a 24-17 defeat at Hamilton. The Alouettes were penalized seven times for 74 yards and had trouble protecting quarterback Trevor Harris, who was sacked five times and was forced to miss the final play of the game after taking a hard hit.

Harris led the team in rushing with 39 yards on four attempts and went 25-of-41 passing for 288 yards and a score. Montreal’s lone touchdown came on a four-yard pass to receiver Hergy Mayala with 6:45 left in the game. A trip back home after two straight on the road will be welcome, but a matchup against the league’s best team will be far from a breeze.

The Blue Bombers are 7-3 straight up in their last 10 against the Alouettes, although Winnipeg has lost its last two in Montreal. A short week and the lack of rest for a team that has yet to get a bye may result in a slow start for the Big Blue.

Look for Winnipeg to pull this one out by a touchdown in another late surge on the road.

Prediction: Blue Bombers -5.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Over/Under analysis

While Collaros came out firing last week, Winnipeg has a chance to sit back and rely more on their run game, with Montreal allowing the second most rushing yards per game in the CFL. The Alouettes, on the contrary, won’t have much space to run against Winnipeg’s stingy rushing defense and will be forced to rely on Harris through the air.

The Blue Bombers rank third in sacks and will get after the vulnerable Harris, who may get banged up worse than his latest outing. The Blue Bombers will keep points off the board for Montreal while they grind it out on offense and wear down their opponent.

Take the Under, which is 5-1 in the Blue Bombers’ last six versus teams with a losing record. The Under is also 17-8-1 in their last 26 games overall.

Prediction: Under 47.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Best bet

The league’s best scoring defense will hunker down against a shaky offense that managed just 17 points in Week 8 against Hamilton, who ranks fifth in points allowed (25). While the Blue Bombers are surely ready for a break in their schedule, the defending Grey Cup champions are riding a wave of momentum and seem to find a way to pull out a win each and every week.

Winnipeg will get vengeance on its 28-14 defeat to Montreal last year when backup Sean McGuire filled in for Collaros and had a rough afternoon in his first pro start. Collaros and Oliveira will turn in a strong performance on Thursday, while the defense will do enough damage to give Winnipeg a decisive win on the road.

Pick: Blue Bombers -5.5 (-110 at DraftKings)
