Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall betting preview
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II delaying their initial fight date, these two finally are set to settle a grudge match that has been stewing since a 2012 amateur clash was won by Marshall. Both have become incredible professionals, with Shields becoming a trailblazer for women’s boxing and a big reason why this weekend’s card borders on being historical.
Marshall is a legitimate power puncher who started at super middleweight before making her way down the scales to middleweight and picking up the WBO title. She carries her weight well, and it translates to real fight-stopping power, with her last seven wins coming by stoppage.
This comes in contrast to Shields’ technical wizardry. It took her 10 fights to win titles in three weight classes, a testament that she is seemingly a class above the majority of her competition. Shields also possesses some of the fastest hands in the sport (regardless of sex), and she is an intelligent boxer.
Shields is a busy fighter who can suffocate her opponents with combinations, but she couldn’t knock a glass of water off a table. Marshall is the taller and stronger fighter of the two, and she has an entire country behind her. It will be difficult to score points for Shields if she gets in constant retreat or ends up in a full-on fight.
On paper, these two are evenly matched. It won't be easy to score, but we’re hoping that it ends up being a great fight to watch.
Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall boxing prediction and best bet
Prediction: Marshall ML
Two things stand out ahead of this even fight. First is that Shields incorporates much of what we saw from her in the amateurs, and the other is that Marshall is fighting at home.
Marshall should come forward and walk Shields down from the start. As the bigger puncher with the crowd behind her, she’ll be landing the harder shots as Shields angles for a position. Shields will be on the move and firing off when Marshall gets set with her power shots, but she’ll have a hard time with her limited power.
Either Marshall builds a strong lead or Shields starts giving up rounds later, but this fight won't end with a clear win for either woman. We’re betting on Marshall’s heavier hands and the boost of the London crowd to lift her past Shields.
Prediction: Savannah Marshall moneyline (-110 at DraftKings)
Best Bet: Marshall to Win by Decision or Technical Decision
Shields has been dropped before, but it’ll take a colossal lapse of judgment for Shields on Saturday to set up such an outcome. I'll be taking Marshall to get the job done on the cards. The height and size advantages, as well as acting as the aggressor, will give her plenty of scoring opportunities.
Shields might not land with the same type of scoring authority, and the bigger puncher tends to get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to closer rounds. We’re going with Marshall by decision at +280.
Prediction: Savannah Marshall to Win by Decision or Technical Decision (+300 at DraftKings)
