Fight analysis
The first time these two fought in 2022, everybody thought that Jack Catterall did enough by the end of the fight to achieve a massive upset victory. He out-landed Josh Taylor, dictated the action, and cut Taylor open ahead of scoring a knockdown to accentuate his performance. Then the decision came: Taylor won, and everyone was furious that the judges missed an easy call.
Since then, Catterall has been calling for the rematch, and Taylor is only now taking it because there are no better options for him after a one-sided loss to Teofimo Lopez last summer severely impacted his stock.
Though Catterall has been dogging him for the last two years and Taylor is determined to prove he is the better man, this version of Taylor is not going to win this fight. The thing about Catterall is that he is a talented boxer with fluid movement, fast hands, and plenty of patience. He doesn't have stopping power, but he has good follow-through if he manages to find an opening. He looks like he's rounding out to be a legitimate contender.
Taylor will need to summon whatever he has left to pull this off, and this would have been a hard fight for him at any stage of his career. Maybe he'll be in better shape since it's been nearly a year since the Lopez loss, and he's used that extra time to focus on his conditioning. Taylor should come forward and aim to raise his punch output. Catterall needs to focus on being first and not letting Taylor get away with looking like he’s landing the quality blows if he wants to leave no doubt that he’s the better man.
Pick: Catterall moneyline (-110 at DraftKings)
Best best analysis
I don’t doubt that Catterall is a bad style matchup for Taylor and should have won the first fight, and I’m fairly confident that he should outbox Taylor again. However, Taylor could make this fight close by coming forward and throwing with intent. Catterall plays the long game, and the problem with fighters who opt to go the rounds is that there are going to be parts of the fight where they give up if it’s for the good of the overall strategy.
Catterall has looked sharp in his recent fights, and he has all the confidence in the world, knowing that he got the better of Taylor despite the scorecards. While Taylor’s decline has been sharp, he isn’t all the way gone yet. I'm not going to go out and say that Catterall will beat Taylor as badly as Lopez did, mainly because Taylor survived that punishing beating and managed to go all 12 rounds.
