It's never a good idea to bet with emotion, or on the team you have an affinity for, but I couldn't help myself for Game 7 of the Calgary Flames vs. Dallas Stars first-round playoff series. I bucked the trend, went with my gut and put a wad of cash on the Flames to win on the moneyline, the Stars to lose by less than two goals, and the both teams to score less than six goals. Everything came to fruition when Johnny Gaudreau scored in the most nerve-racking, anxiety-riddled, yet exciting way, in overtime. The Flames won 3-2 and advanced to the second round.

I was extremely confident the New York Rangers would keep it tight in Carolina for Game 2, so I placed a bet backing the Rangers to lose by less than two goals (+1.5). The Rangers were coming off a Game 1 loss, so I banked on them having a solid bounce-back performance, even if that meant a marginal one-goal loss. The Hurricanes were up 1-0 with over two minutes to play when Rangers' head coach Gerard Gallant pulled Igor Shesterkin. That, I thought apprehensively, was too much time for the Rangers to hold out without conceding an empty netter. Artemi Panarin had the puck deep in his own zone with five seconds to play and, in a Hail-Mary attempt, tried to get the puck down ice. It was intercepted in the neutral zone and immediately deposited into the open cage by Sebastian Aho with two seconds to play, dooming my +1.5 spread pick. That was a nasty pill to swallow and I still haven't quite forgiven Panarin.
