The hottest team in the WNBA will look to improve on a 3-0 start as the Minnesota Lynx play host to the struggling Connecticut Sun on Friday night.
Minnesota is clearly the better team here, but with a spread this big, I’m looking at Connecticut to cover in my Sun vs. Lynx predictions and WNBA picks for May 23.
Sun vs Lynx predictions
My Sun vs Lynx best bet: Sun +16.5 (-110 at FanDuel)
The Minnesota Lynx have started the year strong after reaching the WNBA Finals last year, starting the season 3-0. Minnesota is second in the league in scoring (91.0 ppg), is shooting the ball efficiently (49.5%), and boasts the leagues leading scorer in Napheesa Collier (28.3 ppg).
So far, we’ve seen nobody come close to stopping the Lynx, who have won their first three games by an average of 11 points.
The Connecticut Sun are experiencing a much different start to their season. In 2024, Connecticut went 28-12, posting the second-best regular season record in the WNBA before falling to Minnesota in the playoff semifinals.
That led to a mass exodus from Connecticut in the offseason. The Sun lost head coach Stephanie White, who left to take the same job for the Indiana Fever, then saw stars Alyssa Thomas (traded to Phoenix), DeWanna Bonner (free agency), and DiJonai Carrington (traded to Dallas) all leave the roster.
The result was a diminished squad that wasn’t able to replace all that talent for 2025, instead building a younger roster that’s in rebuilding mode this year. Outside of veteran Tina Charles (21.5 ppg), there isn’t much star power on Connecticut — and there’s not much expectation of winning, either.
That’s been evident in its first two games. The Sun allowed 90 points to the Washington Mystics in their opener, then got blasted by 25 points by the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday. Connecticut’s biggest issue has been on the defensive end, where their first two opponents have shot 45% from the field on their way to averaging 88.5 ppg.
If that makes tonight’s game sound like a mismatch, that’s because it is. But the real question is the size of the gap between these two teams. And with a 16.5-point spread, I’d have to think Minnesota was poised for an uncompetitive victory.
But we haven’t seen the Lynx win by that margin yet this year, and they’ve been shaky enough on defense — allowing 80.0 ppg to opponents — that it’s hard for them to create the kind of distance needed to cover such a large spread.
Sun vs Lynx same-game parlay (SGP)
While I’m taking the Sun to cover the enormous spread tonight, that doesn’t mean I have much confidence in Connecticut, especially on the defensive end. That’s why I’ll be taking the Over in my same-game parlay.
The Sun have allowed 87+ points in each of their first two games this year, and now face off against Minnesota team that has scored at least 85 points in each of its first three games. The Lynx have also given up over 80 points in two of their first three outings, so I’m expecting plenty of scoring on both sides.
With all those points on the board, I’m taking Collier to score at least 25 on her own.
Collier is averaging 28.3 ppg so far this season, and has hit the 25-point mark in two of her first three games. Against a shoddy Sun defense, Collier should have no trouble hitting this total and bringing home our SGP.
