The top pick from this year’s WNBA draft is still finding her footing in the pros.
The Dallas Wings are set to host the Seattle Storm in their second game of the season and my Storm vs. Wings predictions expect rookie guard Paige Bueckers to bounce back from her underwhelming shooting night in her debut.
Here’s how I’m targeting this Monday, May 19 matchup with my WNBA picks.
Storm vs Wings predictions
My Storm vs Wings best bet: Paige Bueckers Over 22.5 points + rebounds + assists (+105 at bet365)
Paige Bueckers was the No. 1 pick in the draft because of her versatile, all-around game. Her efficient three-level scoring is her calling card, but she’s shown that she’s willing to defer to her teammates by setting them up with elite playmaking. Bueckers is too capable of stuffing the stat sheet for her total to be this low.
Bueckers paced all Dallas Wings starters with 30 minutes in her debut and amassed 10 points alongside seven rebounds and a pair of assists. She wasn’t far off 22.5 despite shooting just 3-for-10 from the field against Minnesota.
The WNBA is a step up from college but Bueckers shot better than 52% from the field in all four of her campaigns at UConn and only fell short of 41.0% from three in 2021-22.
Bueckers has tremendous consistency as a shooter and can depend on the hot hand of Arike Ogunbowale, who averaged 22.2 points per game last season, as a reliable assist outlet when she’s not looking to score herself.
The game will come easier to Bueckers when her teammates are hitting shots, which they will tonight against the Seattle Storm.
Storm vs Wings same-game parlay (SGP)
It seems like the days when Ogunbowale could chuck up as many triples as she wanted are coming to a close.
The star guard often had to be extremely aggressive to create her own shots for the underperforming Wings last season. Dallas is still amid a rebuild, but Bueckers’ presence will lower the likelihood of Ogunbowale getting enough shot volume to hit three triples in a game. Especially since she’s just a 35.0% shooter from deep for her career.
Ogunbowale was 0-for-3 from beyond the arc against Minnesota. That’s her lowest 3-point shot total in a regular-season game since August 2023. That’s very telling.
Both sides in this matchup are looking to find themselves after the departures of major stars. Satou Sabally left Dallas for Phoenix while Jewell Loyd forced her way to the Las Vegas Aces over the offseason. The Storm have an experienced core group with chemistry, which will be the difference.
Seattle scored just 59 points in its first game of the season but isn’t likely to get a 2-for-18 combined shooting night from Gabby Williams and Ezi Magbegor again. The Storm have the right infrastructure and haven’t had trouble dominating this matchup regardless of where it takes place.
