Yoshinobu Yamamoto showed some signs of wear and tear in June with an ERA of 4.21. His BA saw a notable increase to .258 (.146 in May), as did his WHIP to 1.40 (0.80 in May). The easiest explanation is that his fastball just wasn’t working the same. After holding hitters to a .118 BA and .114 SLG on the four-seamer in May, he saw those numbers jump to a .333 BA and .542 SLG in June. The 26-year-old throws the heater 37% of the time, so a drop-off in effectiveness on his most-used pitch is a bit alarming. He faces a Chicago White Sox team that certainly isn’t making any waves this season. Still, the lineup has been difficult to punch out lately with an 18% K rate (fifth-lowest) against right-handed pitchers in the last 10 days.
