PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Joe Saunders (8-9, 3.76 ERA) vs. Phillies LH Cliff Lee (12-8, 2.83).
After winning four of his five decisions in July, Saunders has labored in his pair of outings in August. The 30-year-old Virginia native permitted five runs on 11 hits in six innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Houston Astros. Saunders has split a pair of career decisions against Philadelphia, although the setback came in horrific fashion on April 27. He allowed a season-high six runs on 10 hits in an 8-4 loss to Philadelphia. While Saunders has struggled lately, Lee has been downright dominant. The 32-year-old Arkansas native has recorded back-to-back shutouts to highlight a current three-game winning streak. Lee scattered four hits over eight scoreless innings on Aug. 9, and belted a homer to lift the Phillies to a 2-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is 2-1 in his career against the Diamondbacks, although the loss came in a 12-strikeout performance on April 25. He yielded four runs in seven innings to drop a 4-0 decision.
ABOUT THE DIAMONDBACKS (69-53): Overbay's heroics spoiled Roy Halladay's bid for a National League-leading 16th victory of the season. Overbay drove in all three runs as Arizona won the opener of its 10-game road trip Tuesday and extended its lead in the NL West to 3 1/2 games over the San Francisco Giants. Overbay, playing in place of the injured Xavier Nady, will look to continue his good fortune against Lee - against whom he is 4-for-13 in his career. Justin Upton scored for the seventh straight game when he came around to score on Overbay's double. The Diamondbacks purchased the contract of lefthander Wade Miley from Triple A Reno and placed righthander Jason Marquis on the 15-day disabled list. Marquis suffered a fractured shinbone during Sunday's victory over the New York Mets.
ABOUT THE PHILLIES (78-42): Lefthander Cole Hamels is dealing with inflammation in his left shoulder and will miss his next start. He is scheduled to throw Wednesday before likely tossing a bullpen session on Friday. Righthander Kyle Kendrick is expected to make Saturday's start against the Washington Nationals in Hamels' absence. Chase Utley went 3-for-4 on Tuesday and has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, but he has yet to face Saunders in his career. Raul Ibanez has fared well in his career against Saunders, dating back to their days with the American League West rivals Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels, respectively. Ibanez is 8-for-23 with two homers and six RBIs against him.
FINAL PITCH: Philadelphia placed veteran third baseman Placido Polanco on the disabled list with a sports hernia. The move is retroactive to Aug. 7, meaning Polanco could conceivably return early next week. Polanco will need to undergo surgery, but he is planning on delaying it until the off-season.
