Miami @ Arizona preview

Chase Field

Last Meeting ( Aug 20, 2012 ) Miami 12, Arizona 3

The Diamondbacks might want to start thinking about pitching around Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who has five home runs in his last five games. Stanton crushed two homers in Monday’s opening game of the series, which continues Tuesday and concludes with Wednesday’s doubleheader. Since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 7, Stanton is 13-for-43 with five homers and 11 RBIs. He had plenty of help in Monday’s 12-3 win, starting with Jose Reyes’ four hits. The loss dropped Arizona five games behind first-place San Francisco in the National League West.

When the series continues Tuesday, the Diamondbacks will be without shortstop Stephen Drew, who was traded late Monday to the Oakland Athletics for minor league infielder Sean Jamieson. Drew spent seven productive years with Arizona, but hit just .193 this season while struggling to recover from last season’s ankle injury. Arizona will likely fill Drew’s roster spot by calling up Tyler Skaggs or Trevor Bauer from Triple-A Reno to pitch one game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Miami will call up Jacob Turner from Triple-A New Orleans to make his Marlins debut in Game 1 of the doubleheader, with Wade LeBlanc scheduled to start the second game.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Ricky Nolasco (9-12, 4.94 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Trevor Cahill (9-10, 3.75)

Nolasco turned in his first complete game of the season Thursday at Colorado, but still lost for the sixth time in his last seven starts. He is 5-2 with a 4.14 ERA in seven career starts against the Diamondbacks, including 3-1 with a 4.55 in four starts at Chase Field. Nolasco is 5-6 with a 4.97 ERA in 12 road starts.

Cahill, who allowed one run over six innings against the Cardinals on Thursday, has gone seven innings or more only twice in his last 11 starts. While he isn’t pitching deep into games, he’s still been effective, going 2-2 with a 3.90 ERA over his last nine starts. He is 5-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 11 starts at home this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Stanton has hit 13 home runs against teams from the National League West in only 25 games.

2. Diamondbacks OF Jason Kubel homered in Monday’s game and is 8-for-17 against Miami this season.

3. Marlins C John Buck is hitting .347 (17-for-49) in August after entering the month with a .168 batting average.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
